First 4Runner Build Thread/Intro SR5 4WD lots of pics!!

Pic 2, sorry. You can see the flange to the block I believe.. more of a joke than anything. Are they muddy?

Edit: I have a screen more cracked than the stock exhaust manifold, my bad, they just have that bronze heat coloring.

Oh yeah they have some serious heat treating but they are going to last for a long time :)

My truck is finally back on the road after being grounded since June with an intermittent no-start issue. After I sorted that out I took it to a reputable tuning shop here in San Antonio and had the MapECU3 wired and dialed in. I have a video coming up soon.

This has to be one of my favorite build threads. truck looks awesome and glad to see it back on the road.. Great job..

Too damn bad they stopped selling the S/C .... Or that I wish the 5th gens would come with a V8.. BA Video though.. :bump2:

For those curious the issue with starting was a starter relay. The truck would start some days 4 or 5 times in a row and then the next 20 times it would just do nothing, no cranking, no clicking, nothing. So it pissed me off and I left it alone. Then i screwed with it a couple times and sorted out that if i pulled the starter relay and jumped it with a pair of pliers it would start every time. So got that fixed.

Then on to the tuning. Gadget from URD recommended getting the MapECU3 tuner, it's a decent piggy back. Not sure why in retrospect why I went with that based off that recommendation, it's a simple/basic table that doesn't allow for exact adjustments. It is cool that it can control the timing though. MapECU guys were kind enough to work up a wiring diagram to get the tuner wired in. I decided that I wanted it to work and not try to do it myself while working 60-70 hours a week so I paid the pros. Theres a tuning shop in SA that's called PrecisionR and they were up for the challenge. They wired in the tuner and got to adjusting the fuel. They found that the stock 8 injectors were not able to provide enough fuel so they wired in the 9th injector on the back of the TRD S/C from the factory. With the use of the 9th injector they were able to get the fuel and timing sorted out. The results were dramatic. The truck pulls so much harder that it did un-tuned and runs smooth through all gears in the rev range. I have a cheapy Harbor Freight boost gauge that reads 6.23412341 pounds of boost (a bit over 6) in about 50 degree weather. Keep in mind that with a 50 degree external temp my intake temps are on average 3-4 degrees above the external temp due to the snorkel.

Results were fun, as seen in the video. It does have a bit of traction issues, i'm probably going to snap a CV soon if I keep getting it from a dig. In the rain there's no going anywhere fast. With the traction nannies on, theres no power. With them off the outside wheels spin and spin and spin and spin....so that's fun. In the video I raced an IS300 and he didn't win so theres that too. I raced a F150 2013 EcoBoost on the highway and he didn't win either so theres that as well. But I've only driven it like 20 miles so I'll just have to see how it does. As far as how much power it has I have no idea, like none, they road tuned it. If a AWD dyno comes in front of me in the future I'll throw it on there. I think I'm going to throw a truetrac in the rear to help with traction both on and off road in the future and ARB lock the front.

Now I just can't wait to boost the shit out of my S2000.

I'm sure you can pull the front driveshaft, lock the center diff and drive in 2wd. The rear 3rd member I bought, that was broke, allowed only the rear driveshaft to spin freely and I couldn't go anywhere. I locked it in and moved just fine. Obviously I would test it a little, but shouldn't be an issue for the dyno. I keep meaning to pull my front and really try my assumption out, but I was so busy all summer and now I"m still waiting on a rear 3rd member.
The donuts one could do in 2wd.....

great build, was fun reading it all. always wondered want it would be like.

as for the v8 didn't they go VVTi for the 05+ 4.7/4.6 which is why they stopped making the s/c? I think I read something about 240ish to 280ish hp?

I really wish they woulda done a part-time 4wd for the v8 but pretty sure people would kill tires in a T4R :D
