My two cents, just don't get over confident with 4WD and you'll be fine. Over confidence is what will get you into trouble. Last season, the only car I saw the embankment was a Pathfinder, didn't notice any cars or anything else with the 10+ trips I went up to the sierras.
In CA, the highway is usually shut down before all vehicles are required to have chains. That's precisely why 4WD was important to me, so I don't have install chains in the cold and hang my butt into traffic doing so.

I've never seen a road shut down except in the passes. I have seen dozens of checkpoints where cops stop you and tell you that you can't go any farther without chains, unless you have 4WD. If it's 2WD they won't let you through until you put the chains on. I've had it happen mostly at mammoth or tahoe, but had it happen a few times here at our local mountains.
I live in Boulder, CO, and go up snowboarding a lot. I see chain restrictions and last year was the worst year in CO in 15 years. I drove the STOCK duelers. Can't complain one bit. Drove down to NM when I-25 was closed. Saw a car on the side of the road every 50 yards (literally), kept it at 30mph and made it safely through no problem.

If you get stuck, lock the diff.
4LO is for crawling. Unless you're offroading, you don't need it.

So today was my first day in the snow (of the school year) and I'm reminded of a few things:
How safe I feel in the 4runner. VSC, ABS, ATRAC, TNT, NBC, MTV, and the rest of them really do their job.
I really miss some aspects of my Ford Explorer (it just had ABS). I tried to do a donut today, and it stopped me... My friend and I used to have 360 competitions in his Jeep and my Ford.

I have 3 choices... H4, H2 and L4.

Wouldn't mind bein able to go into 2wd for city driving. Oh well.

I was in the first winter storm of this season. It snowed about 2 feet in 1 afternoon. Most roads werent plowed. While trucks were pulling over on the side of the road, I was just passing through. My guess is that they were RWD trucks. Lots of cars spinning their tires in parking lots, blocking entrances and exits which made me drive over snow banks to get in and out around them 
In any case, when the time is right, lock the center-diff and do donuts. (I hope there isnt anything bad that could happen from doing that)
