A couple of people expressed interest in building a fishing rod rack similar to mine so I figured I would do a little write up
Tools Required:
Drill
Hack saw
Tape measure
Sharpie marker
2" Hole Saw
7/8" Hole Saw (paddle bit may work it is only for drilling through PVC)
3/8" Drill Bit (or similar size doesn't have to be exact it is for the zip tie holes)
Materials Required:
5 1/2' of 1 1/2" PVC pipe
1 1/2" PVC Coupling
PVC primer and cement
4- Large (fat) zip ties
WD-40 (to lubricate the hole saw)
Clear silicone
I found it easiest to remove the grill to prevent damage but it is not necessarily needed
1. Ok so first you find the Center of your grill
2. Measure out 4 1/4" to each side of center
3. Measure out 9 1/4" to each side of center
4. Then Measure 2 1/4" From the back side of your bumper this will be to center the holes depth in your bumper
5. Then after you have all of your holes marked Use a center punch and hammer to dint where you are going to drill
6. Using WD-40 Spray the area you are about to Drill with the 2" Hole saw
7. Make sure to keep the drill pointed perpendicular to the bumper to keep from making your holes oblong or larger
8. every few seconds spray WD-40 all around the hole saw and bumper to keep from burning the hole saw up (mine still looked practically new when I was done)
9. After you have all of your holes drilled then measure out 4 16" lengths of 1 1/2" PVC pipe and cut them with your hack saw
10. Using your 3/8" drill bit drill the holes for the zip ties spaced like this
11. Sand all edges of the PVC pipe to take off any burs and make a smooth end that wont cut your rod handle
12. Apply Primer the inside of 1/2 of the coupling and to the first inch or so of your pipe on the opposite end than where you drilled the two zip tie holes
13. Glue the couplings to the top of the pipe you cut
14. Insert your PVC pipes and couplings into the bumper with the holes you drilled for the zip ties facing backwards
15. Mark the front on each of the couplings (this will be where your notch will go)
16. Remove all of your Pipes from the bumper
17. Using the 7/8" hole saw drill the couplings just below the top so the sides curl back in a little bit this will help keep your reels secure
18. Sand the top of the coupling that you just cut until it is nice and smooth
19. This would be a good time to paint the holders if you would like
20. Insert the holders into the bumper
21. Starting from the bottom zip tie hole feed the zip tie through the pipe and cinch it down tight around the frame support that is there. There are little notches that the pipes fit into nicely
22. Using Clear silicone from the underside seal around where the coupling meets the bumper this helps to keep the holders from vibrating
23. Allow the silicone to dry and you have just completed your new rod rack
