Fitting help needed on FJ Steelies... Having issues over here.

Gents,

2016 TRDP + Genuine FJ steelies (real Toyota part). Had the steelies stripped and powder coated. Then took them to be mounted. Shop said they didn't fit? Verified in person. Center knockout (barely) didn't clear the edges of the front center cap (I'm assuming this is a grease cap). Tire shop speculated the powder coat people added to much material and suggested this needed to be removed. I spoke with my powder people and everything seemed to be ok as far as thickness. Even sanded a small portion to verify.

Am I missing something here? Does the center grease cap need to swapped out? Did something change on the 2016 that prohibits use of the FJ steelies?

Any advice/ideas would be appreciated!

Idk how that's possible, I had more than 6 coats of paint on my steelies when I ran them. They slipped right on everytime. Nothing is different on your truck as mine. Same axle nut cover across all trim levels, but I'm pretty sure the wheel center aligns on the hub anyways. Which is the same on all trim levels too. If it's just barely not going on, sand the powdercoat off the inner edge of one wheel and see if that works.
 
[MENTION=133973]acolle[/MENTION] the more I think about it the more the thick powdercoat makes sense. The wheel is made within tolerance so tight to where it barely fits over the gin center ring. Powder coat is harder that normal paint so it's probably not giving to the pressure.

And I just checked a old photo on my phone I took of the steelies in the shed. The tabs that stick out near the lug holes that "grab" the hub. Have no paint on them from rubbing.

Almost 100% guarantee of you sand off the powder coat on the 6 bump out tabs they will slip right on.
 
Having had steelies on my previous 5th gen 4Runner for a little bit I can also concur that the center hub was pretty tightly in there. I'm sure the tolerances were pretty tight. Try wet sanding some of the PC in there or knocking it loose with a wire brush. You'll probably take out a bit of the PC but you can hit it with a spray can afterwards.

Super logical. Totally worked. I'm a bit surprised how little material I had to remove to make it fit. Seems like the tire shop could have just done that in the first place. Ok then. Back in the morning to see if they can mount.

That is the difference between Hub Centric vs. Lug Centric. The wheels actually engage/hang by the hub. The studs keep it there. The powder coat (now obviously) is enough to not allow them to seat properly. Those steelies look great.
 
Got them on today. They fit perfectly after shaving down the powder coat. Shop installed the wrong tire size though? They had two sets of 5 special order coopers on the floor. I ordered 275/70s. They installed another guys 255/80s on accident. I kept the mistake... The pizza cutters looked good. This entire rim/tire thing has been a comedy of errors.

I've just spray painted them A LOT and have two sets, but have never encountered this problem.

I'm not sure what year they are, but they are genuine steelies taken from FJ Cruisers.
