Flashing Maintenance Light When Turning Key?

Hi guys,

I notice when I turn the ignition on, I see the orange maintenance light flash 5 times on my dash. This is a 2006 2WD 4.0L 4Runner.

What does it mean?

Should have searched:

Light flashes when you hit 4500 miles and stays solidly on when you hit 5000 miles. Procedure to turning it off (if you change oil yourself):

1. Turn ignition switch to "ON" position
2. Set odometer/trip display to "ODO" mode
3. Turn ignition switch to "OFF" position
4. Depress and hold the Trip Meter "RESET" button while turning the ignition switch to the "ON" position
5. The service maintenance reminder light will:

i. Illuminate solidly for 3 seconds
ii. Blink for 2 seconds
iii. Illuminate solidly for 1 second
iv. Turn off

6. Release the Trip Meter "RESET" button
7. Turn the ignition switch to the "OFF" position
8. Turn the ignition to the "ON" position and confirm that the service maintenance reminder light goes out.

I go out to my 2006 4Runner and notice there is no Reset button to the left of the gauge cluster like is shown in the video. I guess the later models have the reset button right near the mileage indicator.

You don't have two buttons on the far left side of the gauge cluster to let you choose between the regular and trip odometer? One of those two buttons is the Reset button. I believe they all have them. I've never seen one without. They're small and silver and blend in to the gauge bezel.

Correct, my 2006 V6 4Runner does NOT have the two buttons shown to the left of the gauge cluster in the youtube video link above. There are no buttons there. I have the classic push "needle" that comes right out near the temp gauge (I assume the MAINT light reset just works the same way using the needle instead of the button):

You have to use the only button you have next to the temp gauge. Same procedure as outlined above. The 03-05 models had the buttons in the silver trim around the gauge cluster but the 06+ models do not.
