So the plan was to install the body lift today. As I was looking at all the body mounts and planning my attack to do this I noticed grease all over the right side. Sure enough as I though the boot was ripped. So, fix it my self or just have the shop do it like the other side?

It took them about 45 minutes to fix the last one. Ugh, I swear. If anyone is So-Cal is willing to help I'll do BBQ and buy Beer. I have some tools but not the big 32mm socket or a jack. A slide hammer would help to for this job.

35mm socket if the CV is OEM; some aftermarket ones have 36mm nuts.

A wedge, prybar, molding removal tool work well to get it out of the diff.
 
My guy charged me 175 for it all last time. I'm pricing out tools I will need and parts and I'm close to that already. SO......

I just replaced the whole axle. All you need is a jack, jack stands, a 35 or 36mm, a 19mm, a 14mm (pretty sure that's the size...for the bolts holding the ball joint in), a mallet, some grease (for the snap ring), and a pry bar. There are some guys from SD here who could prob help ya.

The problem with replacing the leaking Toyota CV axle with a complete new one from NAPA, AutoZone, O'Rileys Autoparts whatever (assuming you did this) ... is that those axles are inferior to the Toyota OEM ones.

I've read multiple times (so its just hearsay) by other members here that Toyota CVs are the strongest unless you get those super expensive customer fab ones.

Yes it does cost a bit more to properly re-sleeve a Toyota CV axle then to just pop a NAPA one in there but it is worth it.

If it ain't broke don't change it ... well the axle ain't broke just the rubber sleeve.

Good luck O'Blue. I had mine re-sleeved (complete outer and inner) by Truck Shop and I think I paid about $175 for drivers side. I know removing the CV is easy and I look at is as paying $100 in labor for them to do the grease work.


Another idea: Now if you could find a pick n pull or junk yard that would be another story. I remember you mentioning you are not from SD. Have you been down to the Junk yards in Chula Vista? There are dozens and dozens of junk yards down there. It is huge with lots of chop shops and wrecking yards. Most of San Diego doesn't know the area even exists. The business names change but they are all in the same spot. I would start calling every scrap yard down in Chula and I'm sure you will find a 4x4. Buy the CV for $75 (make an offer) and use that one.

Blue, I have all of this except for the 35 or 36 mm socket. If you wanted to pick one of those up and cruise down, I'm sure we could figure it out.

I have talked to toyota about this and they have toyota remand axles for 200 a side(just the axle). so this would be the equivalent to that^^^??

Well picked up all the stuff to do it today, myself and kraze are going to take a stab at it. Guess I need to get good at it if I plan to ever really wheel some hard stuff. We all know they break right.

Thanks for all the help today. All in all it was not a bad install other than the cover to the nut. Look forward to a scouting trip soon for every in the area.

After all the calling around I did and the prices to have it done 175 being the best. I just said F it and did it my self. Took us about 2 hours, about 45 minutes getting the cover off to get to the axle nut(Finally just punched a small hole and came right off). Other than that no issue at all. That and I'm not doing any big wheeling yet so the Autozone one will do just fine (for now). Saving $$$$ of other things right now. IE Lift and Tires.

lol yup that cap can be a ***** to get off the first time you do it. I have permanent prybar dents in each of mine, makes it easier to get off the next time you switch it out. :D

Well I put a nice little layer of grease on it. Not sure if it is a good or bad thing but I will not have to fight it off next time and it will not practically welded itself in either. That and I have a nice small spot of screw driver next time too to pull from,lol... We both were like WTF!!!!!
