FNG needs assistance

Hello all. Just got a red 1986 that will need some TLC but will be my daily driver for a stretch while I fix the blown head gasket on my 1989 pickup with the same 22re. My first question is...why is this truck getting MISERABLE gas mileage? I know the pickup is probably lighter than the Runner & it is 2WD which will make a difference but the Runner is getting HALF the mileage my truck was getting. Also, it is super slow. Again, I know that the 4WD will manifest in the truck being slower...but this is ridiculous. Any thoughts on a quick, somewhat inexpensive fix to this problem?

Also, eventually I want to do a diesel swap on the 4Runner. The outfit that used to sell the 2L-T diesel engine in my area no longer sells them. I can't seem to find the darn things anywhere. Anyone know a source for these or another Toyota diesel that will swap into these rigs? Thanks!

I have heard of people buying a scrapped hilux from canada or a front clip that is imported and pulling the motor from it. Check out yotatech and there is a lot more info on there for motor swaps.

As far as your bad mileage, I would start with simple things such as air filter, spark plugs, injector cleaner, ect... All the little things that will be done on a tune up.

Thanks, SV Dude. The wife is from Canada so maybe I can get some of her family to nose around the Great White North & see what turns up.

I plan to do all of the little things on the mileage for sure. I just haven't had a chance to get to it yet. I'm thinking of adding a better air intake & a header & exhaust system eventually. I'm hoping all of these things will correct the problem. Any other suggestions before I get started?

Make shure your ignition timing is right ths can affect your acceleration and mileage if not correct. also if your runner has a catilitic converter be shure it's not plugged. Alot of times you will notice the suv runs ok at first and seems to slowly lose power as it gets warmer/or runs for a longer time. Hope this helps.

One more thing that I forgot to mention... I don't know if it's common or not but if your 4runner has larger tires are are underinflated your mileage will be horrable, also a bad alignment will dramatically decrease mileage.

Thanks for the pointers, everyone. Those with the 22re engine rolling on something close to 31's...what mileage are you getting? This way I will at least have an idea of what number I need to reach to consider the problem fixed. Thanks again.

Also, my '86 doesn't have the original engine & the PO said that the owner before him got the donor engine out of a pickup. I believe they changed the transmission as well & it is a 5 speed. Did the '86 come with a 5 speed or a 4 speed? My gearing may be all wrong. All I know is that running on the 31's, 5th gear is pretty much obsolete. Any help here is greatly appreciated.

Also, no posts about what mileage you guys are getting. Anyone?

I would love to help you with that because I'm running 33x12.5's, but my runner is still in pieces in the driveway :(
