Focal IS 690TOY Front Speakers Designed for Toyota

I was thinking about doing IS690 in the front and IC165 in rears and hatch, along with sound deadening. Will it sound good enough without the amp?

I went through it all, these are my findings with the SR5 Entune Premium system (no sub).

Started with the TOY Focals for front and rear doors, added some basic Focals in the rear hatch to save a few bucks. Was better, but bass was still lacking. Overall volume was slightly lower.

Went back and added Dynamat to all speaker locations to outer skins and replaced plastic factory linings, covering all holes. Huge improvement to bass, but still noticed I was missing certain low-mids in various songs.

Added a JL XD/400 4-channel amp being fed with an LC7i to give the speakers the power they crave. Another huge improvement, but still a few songs that were missing low-mids.

Thought I was done but the more I listened, I was not satisfied with the missing notes. Tried swapping the LC7i for the LCQ-1, removed immediately, could not get rid of the dreaded hiss from the LCQ-1. Was looking for low-mid control to get some of the notes back.

Finally swapped the LC7i for the JL Audio Fix-86. Got a great deal on Sonic electronix after leaving it in the cart for 24 hours while I waffled on the decision. And now I could not be happier. The Fix gives a nice flat signal plus the new model uses the Tun software to allow for digitally tweaking the eq with a computer. Now I am done messing with it.

Yes I could have saved some money and headache by replacing the entune head, but I do not like the look of aftermarket for this vehicle. The unit does what I need it to do, and now sounds great. I also did not want to lose the added cargo room by adding a sub to fill in the missing low-mids. This has plenty of thump for what I listen to.

Thanks! I just really dont want to spend over 1k in sound system and dont want to add amps, subs, tuners etc. ( had enough of those in my life :drum: ) Based on my research some people are happy with just swapping the speakers to Focals and some with adding amp, sub etc. I really hop I can just swap speakers and add some sound deadening and it will be enough for me to be happy, after all it really depends on the person, some are more peaky with sound quality, some just ok and some dont give a f.. at all. I'm somewhere between peaky and ok

Oh I get it, I quickly got led down a rabbit hole with the sound system. But after spending almost $700 in speakers, I wanted to make sure they sounded good.

My opinion is if you are not going to amplify the Focals, you will not get your money out of them. Yes they will sound tremendously better, but there are cheaper options that you can get the speaker adapters for to fit into the vehicle that will still sound much better than factory.

I recently picked up Focal ISS 690 from Crutchfield for $140 (brand new).

It is not 100% plug-and-play as IS 690 TOY, but it was close. All I had to using double-sided tape to mount Focal tweeters to stock 3.5 speakers (after you gut them), and solder/crimp tweeter wires to stock wiring. I followed this thread as my guidance. One note, DO NOT use the Focal provided cross-overs. Toyota's stock wiring already has built-in pass cross overs (i.e. capacitors).

These are the speakers I have been waiting for since I bought my 4runner in 2011, I have had several aftermarket systems in since 2011-2012. I installed Polkaudio components up front back in 2012 and coax in the rear doors, I butchered together speaker adaptors it has been ok but I never liked the install.

Added a JL audio amp at that time as well.

Just found out about the focals a month ago. Bought the rear doors first, took maybe 5 min per door. I was so pleased with them I ordered the 6X9 components for the front door, I have the passenger installed, again sounds great, except that toyota wires the tweeters out of polarity, so I will have to get in and change that.
Waiting on some parts to come in before I do the drivers door.

I finally had some free time yesterday to install the 690toy speakers. While I was not totally blown away by the change in sound, it is a definite improvement. I agree that you’re paying a premium for this package. But considering it’s easy enough for an idiot like me to do the install, I’d say it’s well worth the premium.

Advice, not necessarily in this order:
1) watch the YouTube videos & read the threads
2) get some heat shrink
3) pull straight back on the door panels (don’t pull up!)
4) don’t sit in the front seat while you try to screw in the tiny tweeter stabilizer screws. This will save you the 30 minutes I spent running to the fastener store to get a replacement screw after I lost one somewhere in the truck
5) paint the tweeter bracket black, it’s shiny

Here's why:

Its just as bad at night with them picking up every street light you pass as well. I finally just went back in and wrapped them with some black vinyl wrap I had laying around.

For those with the IC 650 TOY's in the rear doors. Did you have to rivet them in? They come with Rivets to mount them and that's what the instructions say to do but I searched all through this thread and no one mentioned having to use a rivet gun to install.

Mine were a direct swap using the OE hardware...no rivets.

You reuse the factory screws. No rivets. Easy peasy.

I have a new Limited and the bluetooth sounds terrible. The dealer tells me it's because the right side speaker (not sure if it's the door or dash) is bad. Apparently the speaker is on national backorder with no ETA. So, I'm thinking about installing the IS690TOY in the front doors and dash. Can anyone confirm if this speaker set will work with the JBL system? I think there is a mismatch in ohms?

I say yes.

If you adjust the fader to rear only its all mud. The rear focals make the same difference there as the fronts IMHO.

They have other Focal's on sale right now for $120 they're just not the plug and play kind. You could get some brackets and wire adapters to save some money. I didn't realize that there were other options. I did all mine with custom brackets and wiring myself
