Fog light hids

Getting ready to install hids into my stock fog lights. Can someone who has done this post a pic of what it should look like after modifying the cover to make the bulb fit?

no one that i know of on this board has tried this though it ran through my mind several times... shouldnt be too bad but it wont be watertight since the bulbs are kinda long.
 
I do not own a 4runner yet (in the process) but I do know you SHOULD NOT! put an HID bulb in a small plastic light housing. HID bulbs are 10 times hotter than a halogen bulb. It will make the chrome start to flake off and then the housing will melt. I did HIDs in the fog lights on my KIA Spectra and the housings were big for fog lights. The chrome started to flake after 2 months so the light output started to suck. then finally the housing started to warp and melt. Unless you have a large light housing or it is made out of real glass and metal I say DON'T DO IT!

well the factory fog lights are glass and so u wont have this problem... its the same as if he upgraded to the Hella Micro DEs that will work for HIDs but cost around $150.
 
They may have a glass front but is the back of the housing metal or plastic? If its plastic it WILL melt and could cause a fire. If you ask me its not worth it. If you want HID fog lights then try to find a set with a metal housing that you can install. It may not melt the first week but it will happen. It happened to me and my fog lights are 3" round. I also lost the chrome on my headlight housings. they didn't melt though. I love HID headlights but I would rather just have HID headlights and only use the halogen fog lights if they are needed. I would also like to point out that I had 35w HIDs not 55w so if you go with 55w you will have more problems.

These aren't retrofitted HID's for 99-02 4runner stock fog lights but the housing
is the same size and can be accommodated to fit in the 4runner's fog light location. No more than 5 years ago these Hella HID's sold for $1299.00( i know). Amazon sells them for $722 nowadays but others may sell them cheaper. I got mine directly from Kerma TDI...for $300 shipped..

Just me throwing an expensive idea.

ive done it. the bulbs are pretty long. i just ghetto rigged it with some ties and cut a hole in the boot to make it fit. i sealed up the boot with rtv silicone sealant afterward.

im using the ddm kit with 3000k bulbs.

ill be taking my fogs apart again (they're flooded with H20) so when i do ill post pictures.
 
Thanks guys for the replies. I did not know that HIDs were hotter than a Halogen bulb. I have HID headlights and just wanted to get the fogs to match. Im running the DDM 5000k kit so i was thinking that maybe some silverstars might come close to the HID color (not so yellow).

Think i might have the heat issue with the Hella DEs?

My son did this mod using DDm Tuning light s with some glass/metal housings hey bought off ebay. I'll see if he did a write up on it?
 
ya i remember talking to sogood about this and i would go the route he did if u want to save money. I had 35w 5000k HIDs and silverstars in the fogs and there was a major difference... the HIDs made the silverstars look like factory yellow bulbs.

you wont have heat issues. ive had my hids in my Hella DEs for about a year and no problems. i usually drive with them on for a couple hours too.

one thing that sucks about fogs is when you do water crossings. haha. i had water above my bumper and now my right fog is flooded and i think it killed my bulb.
 
Pretty sure I'm not going the route of hid for fogs anymore. So I'm not interested in links for the DEs anymore.

Anyone tried led bulbs in the fog light housing? I'm just looking to get close to a 5000k color. No worries about light output.
