Foldable table mounted on roof rack

One of the minor nuance about primitive camping is there is a lack of table and it's starting to get hard to cook on the ground and being able to eat on a table. I am thinking about picking up a foldable table like this one to store on my roof rack but I don't see this setup at all. Is there a reason or something I'm missing? I don't do any hardcore 4x4 the only thing I can think is it might rattle offroading. I have no desire to build a drawer and cook out the back of my car.

Currently I have a yakima loadwarrior roof rack and the table folded up is 3'x3' it should fit easily.

I have one of those plastic folding tables, I mostly use it for tailgating

I do use it for camping sometimes, but its pretty heavy and bulky and a lot bigger than i need if i'm by myself (or even with my wife)

The plastic folding table is a good (though bulky) cheap option but I plan on replacing mine with an aluminum table similar to this one:

The only issue I have with it is that due to the length of the table, the legs aren't very compact, and it is easier to store them separate. I'll see if I can dig up some photos later.

I ended up buying the ALPS Mountaineering Square Dining Table because it is 40" long packed and it should fit on the roof rack if needed. Also it weighs about 8lbs. There is a great deal right now on Backcountry with 2 day free shipping, got it for around $60 shipped tax included.

To late but I've seen a few different styles, hitch mounted that fold up. And can be detached for hike in spots.

Front Runner has solved this problem. It's a bit on the pricey side but I don't see how you can go wrong.

I've got a little 16" X 16" no-name table similar to the above ALPS square table, but the legs are more like a bag chair's legs. It works pretty well for light lunches along the road, but not as large as the OP was after.

I picked up an ALPS Guide Table a couple of years ago on sale for $79, regularly $99. Now Amazon has them for $59. http://amzn.to/2g14ym5

The top is 22" X 61", and has adjustable legs for heights of 30", 35.5", and 42", which is a nice height for cooking. Downside is that it is 25 pounds, and 8" X9" X31" when folded.

The photo was staged. I haven't cooked on it, as it was too big to take along with all of our daughter's college junk. Reviews I read said that it holds up well to stoves, though. I'd read any reviews you can find. You could always have a scrap piece of plywood to use under the stove.

Worlds better than those aluminum ones in my experience.. much easier and less troublesome setup and takedown. I have a different brand but identical looking aluminum and I never use it, just too much of a pain. Don't discount the Frontrunner or EziAwn options either, although they require more space cause the top doesn't fold.

I have the same table and Love it! No melting issues at all when cooking on top of it (use a standard 2 burner Coleman stove). The part I like about it is the flexibility of the feet, they can pivot so if the table is slightly on a rock or or not level ground your can still have it be level.

just picked up the larger Alps Retreat table on BackCountry. Its on sale for $59 with free shipping. Hard to pass on that deal.

I've had aluminum slat roll up style tables and for me the top is never that great. The gaps in the slats make it a little less stable. I know this retreat table will be larger to pack, but its likely to only be used when I'm tear drop camping, so room is not an issue.
