Fomatting the FSM

4wd changes to multimode for all trims in 2001 with the center diff lock and 4hi changing from lever locations to dash buttons. Front axle actuator changes to an electric motor so no more VSV for ADD. I think there was some fuel sender changes as well as the charcoal canister and emissions stuff got moved to behind the rear axle tucked up under the body. Throttle bodies changed. Transmission line pressure/kick down cable went away. That's about all the major changes I can remember right now.

But the question is...are these changes reflected in the 2002 manual. IE will the 2002 FSM work for all other years because maybe Toyota revised that FSM to reflect all changes in previous years.

Does each year have it's own FSM?

Other than me having a 2000 4runner, the biggest mechanical difference between 1996-2000 and from 2001-2002 is the throttle body IAC integration and the brake master assembly

Both of which are common items people toy with.

I'll still update the one I got for the 2000.

In all honesty I can combine the documents from all years but that is a whole new mess I'd like to not get into. I'll start with what I got, in time, I can try adding pages from other years.

2001-02 trucks are significantly different from '96-99, especially in electrical systems, brakes, and a few other areas. I do use the commonly found '02 online manual occasionally (incorrectly labeled everywhere as '96-02), but you need to be aware of the potential pitfalls of using the wrong manual.

I found an online source for '00 manuals, which should cover '99's as well - 2000 4Runner FSM - Printable - Google Drive

I also found an online EWD for the '98, which is very close to '96-97, but with some subtle differences - Dropbox - 1998 4Runner Electrical Wiring Diagram EWD319U - Simplify your life

Your safest bet, unless you have an '02, is to have the correct FSM for your particular year. I have a hardcopy FSM for my '97, which I use as a sanity check against the easier-to-use online manuals.

Each year has it's own FSM and there are major changes between year groups that would matter a lot more (96-98, 99-00, and 01-02) than the minor changes you will get between the years in each sub group (99 to 00 or 01 to 02).

If you truly have a complete manual for a 2000 I would be very interested in this. Everything I've come across that's complete has been for 01-02. I came across one for a 2000 but it was missing the information I need (troubleshooting evap emission control system).

I am good with all I need. As I will get a TS subscription when I need something. Download what is needed and store in my library.

I dont know how fussy toyota is with their copyrighted material. I would hate to see you guys build a mega library and have it forcibly removed though. That would be a bummer for whoever built it and the users that rely on it. :[

Yup, also missing everything related to the 4-cylinder engine and manual transmissions.

So I have realized the hyperlinks probably would not make stuff any better than without....because of one caveat.

After you hit a hyper link it takes you to the page to do a certain set of steps, but what you cant do is go back to the original page you were on before you hit the link. I realized this going into updating the links but still havent figured out a way to resolve that issue.

Now the problem i describe above is exactly why the FSM is packaged the way it is, all split up, in individual files because the original hyper links are set up to where it will open the specific document in a seperate window.

There are two pitfalls here,

1. you would have to open this FSM on a computer to have all the hyperlinks because the original hyperlinks are programmed to open another file (the one you want to go to) and will do so if its in a certain spot.

2. you cant use this on the phone and use it as it was originally intended due to 1.

I will do some brainstorming and see if there is another way to tackle this. Also FYI, whenever you upload a PDF to google drive it will kill all of your original links. You probably have to zip it up, put on google drive, then extract it. And that is kind of annoying to do on a phone lol but you should have to do it once.
