Hello all I am new to posting on this forum and am having an issue with the wife's 4runner. When in 4-wheel drive, it feels as though the wheels are grabbing one at a time in no particular order, pulling the truck all over the road sharply side to side. the drivetrain also feels tight or stiff when turning or moving from a stop in say a parking lot. Not really a modern tech guy, just want her to have a safe car as the winter gets worst. Any ideas on what is going on are greatly appreciated. BTW car is an SR5 with v-6 and manual tranny. what is the history on that runner?
it almost sounds like its got different gear ratios in the diffs.
make sure that you aren't on dry pavement in 4wd, there will be excessive binding, and you may break parts.
Thanks for the reply and I was actually thinking the same thing when I borrowed it tonight for the crappy weather. Been trying to just use 2wd til I can take it in. Don't know a lot about the overall history, Wife bought it when she totaled her Subaru. It does have some lift and slightly over sized tires so the gearing Idea is more than possible. Thanks again.

if you have the means, you could get all 4 tires up on jackstands, put it in 4wd, and run it in gear.
just let it idle, you should be able to see if the ratio is the same.
