Front Door Speaker Replacement Options

Well... I just replaced my dash speakers with some Kappas and the difference is amazing. Anyway, I want to replace the front door 6" x 9"s using just the factory head unit. So I am looking for some good low power 6"x9"s with decent bass. Any suggestions?

Also - plan on buying a bracket from Taco Tunes for the install - looks like it will work perfect - I had a Tacoma previously.

Are the door speakers 6x9's? I thought they were 6.5's? Or are you wanting to make tehm 6x9's with the Tacoma bracket you mentioned?

Yes, the front door is a factory 6"x9"...

From what i've read they are not really 6x9s either in the sense that a 6x9 will just bolt right in.

My suggestion would be to do what Harper7 did and replace them with 6.5 mid bass speakers, you would need to make a bracket to hold them though.

The OEM ones are not full range speakers anyway. But I would be curious to hear what it sounds like with full range speakers there.

Yes, if you buy a Tacoma Kit from Taco Tunes I am pretty sure you can do a 6" x 9". It looks like the same deal that was in my Tacoma. Also - I am trying to steer clear of an amp right now.... just simply want to get a little better sound - I don't need anything awesome. The components with a 6.5 woofer would need an amp to push it.

I did this with Boston SL95s (6x9) and Boston S35s in the dash... Net/net is a huge improvement on sound quality, but light on the bass.. I re-used these speakers from my old car, so it was the path of least resistance....

I have been exploring options, including adding an Amp, replacing the lift gate speakers.... But, I have not come to any good conclusions.. I do not want throw more money at this unless it will substantially improve the sound quality..

I will be interested to hear what you find out and what speakers you put in...

That is funny I was actually looking at the Boston SL95s since they were low power. How would you compare the bass to the stock speakers? Less or More?

Much, much better --- overall a huge improvement. The stock speakers have dime size magnet - anything would be an improvement....

I was looking at Focals and JL 6x9s as well....... But, I have a feeling to get the value from these high end speakers you will need to install an Amp. The stock HU does not push much power. This is the dilemma - this would cost at least $500 to get installed and I am not convinced I will be able to tell a major difference..

Not sure what oem stereo you all have as I know that there is at least 3 different systems from the factory.Wiring is all different, especially SR5's.

I have the JBL system and what they did on it is put crossovers in the amp or on the speakers that gave the dash speakers only high and mid range frequencies and the doors only mid bass. My doors came stock with single cone 6x9 midwoofer speakers. That's how they got the pretty good sound staging like a good component set-up with fairly cheap speakers. Highs and mids bouncing off the windshield with the lows down low in the doors. I hooked up a JL Audio co axial in my door to see and no highs came out of it.

They don't make many 6x9 midwoofers so I went with a 6 1/2 inch midwoofers from MB Quart(PVI 164) that have a 250hz crossover made for a component system. Wish the sensitivity was a little better but my Pioneer has an equalizer which helps.MB Quart PVI 164 in the door

That is what I did -- and it is vast improvement over stock at minimal cost.

What I am struggling with is the best next (logical) step.. adding an amp is likely the best idea --- but, it would helpful to get some input from people that have gone through this... Harper7 mentioned that he would have ignored the back doors if he had to do this over...

After listening to the stereo with and without the Party Mode, I can understand this...

But, what if you amp'd the front and rear doors(replace with JL or similar) and leave the lift gate as is?

I would like to get an expert opinion on this and figure out a good solution..

OK... I put bass blockers rated at 200 hz in the front dash kappas and installed the Boston Acoustics 6" x 9" in the front doors.... WOW what a difference. So much clearer and more bass than before. I did however have to make my own mounting brackets out of MDF board during the install. But they sound great!

I have a quick question for those who installed the speakers in their doors. Did you guys use Dynamat or anything similar for soundproofing?
I’m concern that by doing doors only there won’t be any noticeable difference in sound to justify the cost and labor. Any thoughts?

This is for the JBL system that I have. It has a separate multi channel 650 watt amp in the back pass. side with built in crossovers. The stock JBL nav doesn't have an amp in the HU like the others,it is separate.
On my JBL ,the front doors are only receiving low frequencies because the amp crossover for this channel is blocking the highs and mids. The highs and mids are going to the dash speakers and the amp crossover is blocking the lows to them.

I don't know how the NON JBL is set up as I don't have one. That's where alot of the confusion is going on here as there are at least 3 different systems in 5th Gen 4Runners. They are wired COMPLETELY different, at least the JBL is from the others.

You will get full range at the dash and front doors, those are in parallel. The factory dash speakers had a crossover in them (not sure if the doors do).

Do you have a template or drawing of the mounting bracket you made?
