thought I would be slick and replace a ft drive half shaft while the engine trans and diff are out. Problem is , with the suspension hanging, the shaft joint catches on the lower A frame and wont slide out past it

Jacking under the A only proves the remaining weight isnt enough to over come the spring.

Looks like the only way is pile 1000# of volunteers in there or wrap a chain around the frame and the jack, to force it. Damn if I didnt just sell off my long enough chains. Stand back this might get exciting

BBQ called off

turns out unbolting the lower ball joint lets the lower arm swing down enough to extract the half shaft. Now what am I going to do with a 1/2 of beef ? Its too warm to hang in the garage what with me woking out there

The stub shaft, or the CV shaft? They come apart, you know :). The CV is the one that's the b!tch to get out, and you get around that by pounding the studs out of the half shaft flange.

You can't get the stub shaft out without pulling the CV shaft first - if you pulled them both at the same time, you did it the hard way.

nonsense oh Vermicious One ! With the front ifs differential already out, the HALF SHAFT (what do you mean stub shaft ... half of the half shaft ?) is a one-clip piece of cake. There was interference with the lower A frame but 4 bolts drops the ball joint off the knuckle to get the A dropped just enough out of the way to pull the whole shaft inward. Oh I had to loosen the top of the shock too .

If in fact I had to do it with the diff installed, I would probably pull the knuckle off completely and take the shaft off outward, rather than dismantle the shaft in situ. But thats just me hating to roll around in a lube storm (cos the wife wont join me there ...)

show me your stub Ill show you mine

well I'm already basically done, , going to wait for seals and lower ball joints, I still dont know what zacly you mean stub shaft, but then I couldnt find an all purpose 19mm closed end 6pt ball peen hammer either,

although I am still pleased and amazed at how easy this front end is to work on. YOu can take off just one bit at a time, it seems. The only problem was how far the control arms dropped and no easy way to close (LIFT) them since the engine bay is empty.

I could see, IF the diff were installed, removing the knuckle is a good thing to extract the shaft. It was a while ago but I recall quite a struggle getting the diff out with the shafts both installed. Tight getting the tulips away from the diff.

The only thing that sort of bothers me , is the fact the half shaft is running in a couple of greased bushings for gods sake ... sure its connected to the hub bearings at the far outer end of shaft, but where it entered the hub, its all solid to solid. Even a better reason to install these aisin free wheel hub covers, in order to quit moving those half shafts every day on pavement

more seals in there than St Lawrence Beach in February ;
a dust skirt on the shaft, the hub seal ( hope I got the right one coming, hard to ID), the big flanged one ( $18 !?!?!?!), then the wheel bearing seal in pretty pretty orange. and dont forget outboard - the 2 gaskets and the oring on the free wheel hub.

Is this a hub or a sub?

Thanks

Now I'm less confused by the slang. I have IFS / ADD, I think my vehicle does not have a stumpy shaft, so I left it alone!
