The K9 used I think 5 mount, what Kurt did was press down on Tue middle mount to make it fit as low as possible, then lifted while tightening in the rear to wedge the front down, then lift while tightening in the front for extra leverage. The K9 has strips that fit the length of the gutter channel and you are wedging down the front. Can you do the same?

I guess I've heard conflicting reports about how he mounted his, but in the end, it still sounds iffy to me. I'd heard he manually bent his track to fit the gutter, but it makes sense that he'd leverage the adjustability of his track to fit it.

What I wrote was my best understanding from talking to him about it, he had no issues in 80k miles.

Thanks! I am considering K9, but I also really like all the Front Runner accessories. Maybe I'll go for the shorter Front Runner...hmm, decisions decisions...


I keep coming back to this thread to check out the full length front runner though....it looks so nice!

The idea of having any weight sitting on a "free floating" section of track didn't make sense to me. You're just asking for the track to wear through the paint (even with a rubber strip) and introduce a rust issue.

Mine uses similar tracks to the k9 but is bolted through the roof gutter and has a spacer that keeps the track off of the paint. It is basically the same as the rear mounts minus one bolt which is why I don't carry heavy items upfront.

After looking at the photos apex put up, I do like the idea of having two mounting points upfront for my strength and feel the extra height of those brackets are better for accessories like the table, which doesn't work with my lower mount.

It clears the roof antenna by about 1/8". Can't get any lower than that.

I've seen 2 k9 full lengths on a 5th gen. Both were not very sturdy. You could push up on the rack and watch it flex.

The front runner rack where you secure it in the front. The truck rocks, no flex. That's why I went FRO. But to each their own.

That's what I was afraid of. I've already made the same modifications Gabe has to his antenna, so I have a ton of clearance for a very low profile rack. Oh well, I'm out a little ways from making the plunge. I know it'll be frontrunner, I just don't know how I want to mount it just yet. Maybe I'll grow some balls and drill/tab the front between now and then.
 
If frontrunner has any thanksgiving promotions I'll probably pick one of these up.. still interested in the height of those support panels though if you get a moment!

hope that Front Runner has a black friday sale with at least 15% off! if they do, thats when ill order mine. im holding out for that deal. ive made my mind up on this rack 100%.

Drilling holes in the roof would concern me because of the amount of rust we get here in Hawaii being so close to the ocean. I guess you could do things to inhibit that, but not sure if the risk is worth the reward. I currently have the extended FrontRunner but I have always had the idea of a full-length in mind.
