Okay so here is what I came up with for my Thule rack.

Wow, that's pretty slick. Something like that would help my wife get her wood paddle board onto the 4Runner a lot easier. But those rack contraptions are pretty spendy.

I would be more prone to running that ladder than the back hatch ladder personally. Maybe it's where I live, but I know one day I would come out from a store with some asshat climbing up the fixed ladder.

that's exactly why i went with it ~ if they really want something they'll have to work for it instead of just walking right up

A way to avoid drilling to deep would be to put a stop on the bit,, But yes, that would stink if it went thru the headliner.

Any thoughts on this idea,,
Instead of drilling holes thru the roof, what about some industrial strength double sided tape on the rail? the way I'm seeing it, it's only 22 inches (570mm) from the center attachment point to the front attachment point.

If you don't want to drill look at the Eezi-Awn K9 racks. A very nice solid full length flat aluminum rack.

Anyone know if you can mount a Gobi or Baja wind deflector to the FrontRunner? I love the Baja / Gobi look but want the functionality of the FrontRunner.
 
For everyone with the rack I have a few questions. Are you able to take slats off while keeping the rack on the truck? Have a trail with sunroof but refuse to buy a 3/4 rack. Much rather have the full rack capabilities while being able to take slats on or off when needed.

I'm not sure what you mean by slats, but the Gobi has moveable cross bars if you order them that way, or fixed (welded). You can also order them with a 3/4 floor that has the 1/4 removable sunroof insert, so you can have the best of both worlds. It's hard to eat that upfront cost for the Gobi's and I waited almost two years before pulling that trigger, but now that I have it on I kick myself for not buying it sooner than later. I do not work or am I in anyway affiliated with them, I am just a guy that bought one. Hope this helps, cheers.

With a 3/4 you can still fully use your sunroof. But I'm going to upgrade from the 3/4 to a full also and will still be able to use my sunroof with or without moving slats.

The front two mounting points are on the slats so you can't take them out.

I use my sunroof with the rack just no climbing out :help:

Damn it, I thought I was set on this rack because I thought I could always just remove the first 3 slats for the moon roof.

That is the yakima fat cat 6. I can fit 4 boards and a pair of skis on them. The crossbars on the FrontRunner are high enough that I don't have to remove the bindings on the bottom ones boards. Also the yakima mounts fit on the crossbars without modification. I highly recommend them!
