You ever tried using the ladder in moderately wet conditions? I'll be getting the Gobi ladder to replace my telescoping ladder. I was drying my roof rack after a wash and the ladder collapsed right under me. The ladder is just not secure enough on those mounts. At a camp site, it would be a no-go for use if it rained.
 
Thule on Frontrunner - It works

Sorry for the bad pic, but the box mounts easy. Even make it quieter. LOL

I don't think they will work well. The racks have different side profiles and I think channel width. I have the FR brackets and I like them. To me they are worth the extra money to fit right.

The only thing is they were kind of a pain to put on and take off because they bolt from the top and the bottom. I just drilled down straight through and use one long bolt in each. Takes seconds now to put on and take off.
 
Okay then.

My wife and I have been struggling over the Baja, Gobi, Front Runner rack decision for those of us with moon roofs for many weeks now. As of today the 9 rail Front Runner seems to be the way to go. I don't want to drill and I don't want the caged in feeling when letting the air in from the top. Now that I see the "basket rails" I am even more convinced, but I wonder when they will come out with those for the 9 rail rather than full size system. Thanks all for the information here. Rats that I will need to pay for the Gobi ladder rather than get it for free, but that's the way it goes.

Look into the Prinsu 3/4 rack. It is an extruded t-slot aluminum design just like the Front Runner and stops just short of the sunroof.

Just ordered my frontrunner full length rack from Apex Overland, can't wait to get it! In the meantime I'm planning on installing pull out solar that slides out over the hood. Can someone measure the width between the vertical feet under the rack?? I'd like to go ahead and get the biggest panel that will fit ordered.

IMHO...!!! Best Rack for the 5th Gen 4Runner hands down. I didn't have the tool to do the front rivnut's, not sure if others have installed without putting them in...? I don't have any problems that I can see, but hoping to get over to a local shop and have them do this for me for peace of mind.

Thank you so much, but I'm looking for the space between the verticals on the front in a divers-passengers direction, the solar will come out over the hood.

For those of you that do have a Front Runner rack, during the installation did you put silicone down the bolt holes as well? Tthe instructions just said to put it around them.

I just installed my rack and while it hasn't rained yet, I do have to remove it to install my expedition rail and was wondering if I should kill two birds with one stone.
 
So I'm very close to pulling a trigger to get the FR rack on my 5th gen 4runner now.. I'm curious how hard is the install? I downloaded the manual and it looks pretty easy.. Does drilling required?

I would say it is 6 out of 12 beers. It is easier if 2 ppl do it. Just make sure you silicone around the holes. No drill for the 3/4.

No tool just a bolt, nut, and some washers. Impact driver makes it very easy.
