Frozen Calipers - How many others had this problem?

Sorry to bump an older thread...I just picked up an 07 Limited with 95k miles a month ago and I notice that from a complete stop, the brakes "stick" a little bit when I let off and begin to accelerate. Are my calipers sticking?

Did my front 2 calipers a few weeks ago. The job went surprisingly smoothly. I went with reman calipers from advance auto. Their online coupon (30%) was a wallet saver!

I just had to replace my front calipers for the first time and I've got an '06 with 145,000 miles on it, so I guess compared to some others around here I didn't do too badly.

In response to the poster a few posts back who mentioned that their front wheels wouldn't rotate freely when they were having their tires changed, my thought would be that yeah, that's a good sign you've got frozen calipers. I say this because when I had my tires rotated about two months before discovering the frozen caliper, my passenger side front wheel was reluctant to spin, too.

It sucks that this happens, but I guess on the bright side it's a pretty straightforward fix and once you've got the lifetime warranty you can just do it yourself whenever it happens again. I'd still prefer it didn't happen...

the pulsation is back! less than 3 months with the new napa calipers and one will be making its way back in for warranty exchange. Hopefully this time I can get 4 months :)

had anyody thought about the upgrade to the 5th gen calipers and rotors? i plan on trying it out when i get the funds for a swap and flush

I have had both front caliper freeze up seems like every year.

napa remanned ones cost 85 a piece with a life time warranty great i never had to pay to replace those calipers again just use 30 mins of my time to change them out

I had the issue on both of my fronts. I have replaced the calipers, rotors and pads on the front, and the rotors and pads on the rear. I STILL have a dang pulsating in the brakes.

I had my left front brake caliper seize in 2009 at 130,000 km. I could smell something burning under the front of my T4R, and upon investigating found the left front wheel extremely hot to the touch. Brake pads were toast, but rotors were salvageable. Expensive repair.

Now in 2011 at 141,000 km the right front caliper has seized. This time it was not noticed until I brought my T4R for its regular oil/filter service. My mechanic was checking the tire pressures with it up on the hoist, and he could not turn the rim freely by hand. Again pads had to be replaced, and rotors machined. Expensive repair.

With the power/torque of the V8, early signs of this issue are easily missed. Simply putting the vehicle in drive and stepping off the brake, the vehicle easily creeps ahead. Vehicles with less torque would not creep, leading to easy diagnosis. By the time most if us recognize a problem, the seized caliper has caused damage to pads and rotors.

I take very good care of my T4R, and follow recommended maintenance service. I also expect a certain amount of wear and tear on certain items. But this seems to be a premature failure of a component due to poor design and/or construction.

Update! November 2015 and 169,800 km and the right caliper has seized again. The brake pedal when depressed was starting to feel soft and spongy. Regular brake services done - most recently 6 months ago at 161,700 km.

Went ahead and replaced both front calipers, rotors and pads.

I'm so tired of this issue. I'm going to need to do mine again as well. Less than 20k miles later. I am thinking since the big issue seems to be the passenger rear caliper that it might be the e-Brake that needs to be rebuilt.

For someone who isn't yet experiencing any problems, is there some preventative maintenance that can be done to prolong the service life of the calipers?

If you live in a place that salts the roads during the winter, wash your car frequently to remove the road salt. That was the biggest source of corrosion on my vehicle which was in the Midwest. Thankfully I moved away and upgraded to 5th gen calipers

I'm on the FL/GA border, so I'm good as far as salt goes, but I have an SR5 with 16" wheels (and brand new tires) so the Gen5 swap is out.

Thanks

Same here... 16" wheels by choice and I'm not changing that. Just bought some new calipers and rotors and read something about adding an additional spring on the pads so two per side. Appears you can do this. They push the pads apart when not applying brakes.

Had first set of calipers replaced around 95k miles. Just did them again last week @ 130K miles. Upgraded all hardware to 5th gen specs. Braking is awesome and pedal feels normal (not like pressing a solid board) and is progressive.

Went with Centric calipers from Rock Auto.

Front Rotors are Power Stop Z36 Pads & Rotors

Rear Setup is the complete Power Stop Kit:
Z36 Extreme Performance Truck & Tow 1-Click Brake Kit with Calipers | Power Stop

I would've got the complete front kit setup but when calling to inquire on their rebuilt front powder coated calipers they said they were on such a back order they couldn't confirm when they'd get any.

I change front brakes when my 05 4runner V8 was @ 34000 and all was normal. About few months after while rotating my tires, notice RF pad is less than half and LF still looks brand new, found caliper on Amazon for less than 50 bucks free shipping and change it. is now 56xxx and all ok.

I was amaze how cheap aftermarket caliper and CV axles re on Amazon....

I have an 03 4runner V8 and just changed the front this weekend after 217K miles. It was pulling left when braking. The left caliper was rusted and stuck. I decided to change everything. I went with centric calipers, pads and rotors. SUCH DIFFERENCE!
