Until today my fuel gauge on my '89 4-Runner has been intermittent. It worked fine down to half a tank then went to below 'E'. Today it does not come off 'E' even though full. Could be a bear to find. Just wondering if anyone has had the same problem and can give me a hint on where to start.

I had this problem earlier this winter and noticed the plugs on top of the fuel sensor was apart. (it also leaked diesel out of it, but that happened later, was leakin' through the plug)
Perhaps the meter in the dash is broken?
Could be the case, at least I'd go for the connector first.
How I fixed it was that I removed the tank from the car and broke the connector fully open, soldiered wires on the pins that were left, made a box out of carboard around the connectors, and filled the "mold" with polyurethane, then put the tank under again and connected the wires with some other plugs I had. Of course, that's the poor man's way, you could replace the fuel sensore as well, it's more expensive but prolly works, IF this is the case. Of course, the fuel sensor could be broken as well. But you should be able to measure that if you can access the plug (if it's not broken that is...).
