Fuel pressure test?

My 22re is running crappy missfiring and eventually backfiring. I have replaced cap, rotor, plugs, wires, and coil. Next I plan on checking voltage to the fuel pump and I know I can get a fuel pressure test kit at schucks. I have never done the pressure test. Where do you conntect the pressure gauge?

On a side note, have you checked your injectors electronics? you can do that with a multimeter. It will give you an idea if one has a short or something. Although they can be fine electrically and be plugged up.

Well I havent had much time to tinker, but the weather has been good enough to ride my bike to work.

Got some time today to work on it. Im throwing a code 3. From what I've found on the net a code 3 is:

No signal from igniter 4 times in succession
- Defective Igniter
- Defective Main Relay circuit
- Defective ECU

I have a buddy who is a Toyota mechanic and he says if the igniter is bad on our trucks it won't run. My truck is running, just running crappy. No my question is, what is the "Main Relay circuit" and how do I test it?

Good question. Possibly on the fuel dampener or drill and tap a fitting on the fuel rail?

I was able to rent a pressure test kit from Schucks. I was able to plug the tester into the banjo fitting on the cold start injector. Pressure is good.

I was able to find the Main relay and it tested good also. I did find a bad wire going to my O2 sensor. It is broken right at the connector so Im headed to the junk yard to see if I can find another. Im not throwning an O2 code tho...?

Hit the Jalopy Jungle and was able to find a connector to fix the bad wire going to my O2 sensor. This didn't fix the problem. Couldnt find and ECU at the JJ, but called Barger Mattson and they said there is a ECU out of a 87 4 Runner at another junk yard down the road. I ran out of time and havent called on it yet. Its about an hour away... sure wish I knew for sure its the ECU.

Talked to my Toyota mechanic buddy and he said it doesnt sound like the ECU, I guess they rarely go bad? He was thinking it could be a bad pick up in the distributor. I found a guy on CL that had a used distributor... guess what? Its not the distributor... The truck runs exactly the same with the "new" distributor. Back to the drawing board. This guy also had a ignitor he said he would sell me for 80 bucks. Even though my Toyota guy said that my truck would not run if the ignitor was bad I think I might give it a shot...

Don't get hasty. Let me check when I get home in the morning, but I may have a coil and igniter laying around you can borrow for the price of shipping, if you'd like.

How do you check the strength of spark?

Pull the spark plug, put it back in the wire boot, and hold it near a ground source like the block while the engine is running. You're looking for a strong blue spark to arc to ground every time it fires. If you can't clearly see it spark in the daylight or it's not sparking at the same intensity every time, that's trouble.

Thanks Kid that would be AWESOME! I got one from a guy off CL, that he got out of a junkyard, but its bad.

I found it. PM me your address again and I'll drop it in a box. Keep it as long as you need to isolate and then send it back, or if it ends up fixing your trouble make me an offer on it, whatever works for you. :)

You are a rockstar Kid! I will PM you my address. Thanks!

Ok so it did end up being the ignitor after all. When I got the one off CL I had just swapped the 3 connectors from my ignitor and the coil wire then left it sitting in the engine bay. Then tried to start the truck. It would just crank but not start, I assumed it was bad.

Then Kid sent me one and I did the same thing and got the same result, crank but no start.... I figured the one off CL was bad, but I didn't think Kid would have sent me a bad one?? Then I realized there is another resistor/ground wire that shares the mounting bolt on the bracket that holds the coil and ignitor to the inner fender. So just swaping the connectors left a ground out of the loop... im a moron. So I put the ignitor I got of CL for 60 bucks and bolted it to the inner fender with ground and she runs perfect.

Kid thanks for sending me your ignitor but I won't need it. Your address bled on the box so I cant read it. PM me your address and let me know how much it was to send it. I will put the ignitor and cash in the box and get it in the mail this week. Thanks again!
