Full Plasti Dip + Trail Damage!

For those who are wondering how well the dip holds up to trail abuse, I just got back from the Lone Star Toyota Jamboree in Texas this past weekend and lets just say, I'm amazed.

While dipping mine a few weeks ago, I had a strong feeling that it wouldn't last once I took it off road. I thought branches and brush would tear into the dip like a fat boy on cake. Now I dipped mine in the first place to cover up my existing trail damage, it was becoming an eyesore and I even contemplated about getting the whole thing line x'ed. Decided to go with dip cause it was a cheaper non permanent solution.

Here it is after I dipped it (50/50 black + gloss = Satin Black)







Now after running a few 3's & 4s at the jambo, a lot of tight wooded areas, tons of pinstriping. The light shaded scratch was actually where I had been pinned up against a tree.



After a run through the power wash & the only real way of cleaning dip, use a ton of simple green & a microfiber. Disregard all the green, damn pollen!



There are a few scratches deep in the dip, but nothing like my stock paint. The pinstriping that you saw in the picture above, was literally just marks on the dip, no actual striping.

So if you're on the fence about a full rig dip, I hope this clears up any hesitations.

Looks great man... Did you dip it yourself? It was easy doing sections but I bet it would take a lot of practice to get good enough to do a very large area

Yep, bought the dip kit with sprayer. It was my first time doing huge sections with the gun, just took the plunge and it came out awesome! Just need to keep your arm locked and make even passes. The masking is probably the most important step. The better you mask, the better the result will be.

Looks awesome. been thinking about doing my hood, like some guys on here have done with vinyl. has anyone dipped the black trim pieces on a trail edition? curious if it works/holds up the same on those pieces as it does on wheels and paint.

I plastidipped the plastic trim on the front and rear bumper and it holds up great. Plastidip works very well on plastic.

This really looks great. Satin/flat has been so overdone, especially around here in San Diego, but it really goes well with the lines and shapes of the 5th gen. Glad to see it has that kind of durability.

Like [MENTION=45399]thebwlife[/MENTION] said, I had great results with mine too after some serious abuse on the K-trail. Seems to me the "rubber dip" formulation that's sold by the gallon cures harder than the rattle can stuff.

That is pretty darn amazing! Maybe after I finally get to the point where I can't stand all the striping on mine I'll try out desert tan. I think that with black accents would be sweet! Seen it on an 80 and loved it.

I've searched for hours to determine what sort of damage wooded areas would do to plastidip. Thank you for posting this. Looks like I'll be painting my truck this summer! Maybe I'll just do the glossifier.

Now just need to find a garage where I can apply this.

I would practice spraying glossifier before you do your whole car. It really thins down the dip and instead of spraying a paint like strip, its like spraying straight water.

I did around 10 light coats, took me about 3.5 gallons (2 gallons of black, 1.5 of black/glossifier) which is under what I was told to use.

I'm with you on the "camo green". I wasn't feeling it. I think a mix of gunmetal and forest green or camo green might be cool though. Maybe next time for me.

Awesome! I picked up some bumps and bruises on my front bumper this weekend wheeling. Thankfully plastidip absorbed 95% of the damage. Ready for a new coat!

tackled my wheels this weekend. I made a bit of a mistake in not giving my self enough time before i needed to wrap it up. as i look closer there are some areas where i did not get a good angle and the dip is thinner. I did this Sunday. My question is, can i just go back and touch up those areas or do i need to peel and start over? anyone else have this issue? gone back and dipped over the first layers again?

i guess this is only one way to find out for sure, but just thought i'd ask.

[MENTION=97733]Fasttimes[/MENTION] Just make sure the wheel is clean and spray it again, you do not need to peel it. If you peel it you will have a much harder time.

Andy, thanks for the tip. when i said peel i meant peel all of it off and start over. i will do as you suggest and clean it then try the spray over. I guess i can always go back and peel it all off and start over if i don;t like it for whatever reason. thanks again.
