Game of, what’s that noise?

I loosened it and hand spun things. My question was can it be removed and run. I know it goes around the waterpump but wasn't sure if its running the waterpump and if it was good to run with the serp belt.

You can run it for 30 seconds or so. Old v belts used to make noises like that when they aged or were wet. Have not heard serpentine belts doing it though.

Copy short run time. I dont think its the belt i suspect its one of the idlers or an accesory. Or itd be amazing if it was the fan blade hitting the shroud. Its 2000miles away currently, and its gonna go to a shop when i get back to it hopefully diagnose it quick. I was just hoping to see if I could narrow it down in the mean time.

My first step would be to get my head in there with the motor off and check very carefully around the fan, that’s still what it sounds like to me. I looked under the hood of our 4R today and with a good light and some acrobatics, you should be able to look and then run your hand around that shroud. I’d look in front of and behind the fan. If you don’t see or feel anything obvious, and you have the tools and know how, pop the belt off and run it. It’ll be fine for a minute or so, no worries and you’ll narrow down what it might be pretty quickly. It “could” be a loose timing chain or maybe the guide for the TC is faulty. But you drove it 600 miles with that sound? No misfires? Wasn’t running crappy? I’d think you would’ve had some of those issues if the chain was the culprit.

Yeah absolutely no issues driving it from Wichita to Denver then around Denver. I loosened the Serpentine belt at camp all the rollers seemed fine. Truck is across the country we fly back Thursday to start the rest of our trip. I’m going to check the fan shroud very closely and if I can’t narrow it down take it to a Toyota shop see if they can suss it out for me. Hoping it’s something super simple. But it sounds more metallic to me then plastic but a few days o should know the answer.

Probably too late now, but if you are replacing the entire alternator, might as well upgrade to the 130 amp model from the TE/Limited for an extra $70. 27060-31260 100amp, 27060-31190 130 amp.

I would get the bad alternator back. There's a good chance it is just the bearing that is bad, which is a $20 part. If so, you have a backup, or can sell it used to recoup some of your expense.

I can tell ya one thing dang factory alternators are expensive. I do have the bad one, I'm going to fight with my toyota dealer to get reimbursed since its still under warranty...
