gas mileage poll

i see people posting how many miles they get to a tank...which is fine, except for the fact that they dont tell you how many gallons they are putting in.

for a better gas mileage poll i think the following should be listed.

-Year of car
-Miles on car
-type (auto/manual/2wd/4wd)
-average mpg
-type of driving you do- %highway%city /hilly/flatland
-driving behavior-foot to the floor/trying to conserve.
-any mods over stock- intake/exhaust/big tires/etc


im seeing numbers all over the place, i think this will clear up a lot of confusion about why some people are getting this or that. i think most of the time people will be driving in 2wd, so 4wd should be ommited. i know anytime i had my vehicles in 4wd i would be on the gas pedal harder because it was snowing or something. gas mileage usually went down rapidly

136,000 miles

Serviced at the dealership every 3kmiles since it was new...until I bought it 2k miles ago! Original owner was very VERY particular about this truck. I couldn't believe the CarFax when I checked the VIN. The truck is flawless and in amazing shape.

40/60 highway/city driving

16-17.5 city, ultra conservative driving, as though I'm towing or carrying fragile items. LOL

20 highway, 70-75mph average.

Zero mods.

Mostly suburb around town with about 70 miles a week on the hwy

A little bit of a leadfoot-I like to get up to speed quickly and 70-80mph on the hwy

Here is something to note: Bigger tires will cover more ground per rotation, and since the odometer calculates distance given the rotations of the axle and the stock tire size, everything will be off. I have figured that my new tires are 10% larger in circumfrence, so that means that the speedometer is 10% lower than actual, and thus my odometer is off by 10% as well. so while I record an average of

14-15 city and 19-21 highway

it's actually more like

15-17 city and 21-23 highway (+10%).

is this a correct assumption?

I know going from 265/70 up to the 265/75 is only a 3% increase which is close to an inch taller.

I went from P225/75 to a P265/75, which is a difference of 28" vs. 31" in diameter.

28" x pi = 89" circum.
31" x pi = 99" circum.

difference is 10 inches, which is almost exactly 10% of my current tire circumfrence.

"speedometer reading with non-stock tire is 10.4% too slow.
When your speedo reads 60 mph, you are actually traveling 66.3mph."

seems about right. have you GPSed your car? all my cars usually read a little on the high side to begin with. through a visual radar, my 4R seemed spot on. havent checked with GPS yet.

for a year i went around with 2.73 gears in my transam and programmed for 3.73s saved a couple thousand miles on the odo that lol.

Changing the way the odo reads is a bit illegal I would assume! I am reaping the benefits of the 10% lower mileage. I would estimate 20,000 miles of use since I added the new tires in April of 2006. That's 2,000 less on my odo! sweet! Not that I plan to sell my rig 'til the thing falls apart anyways...
