On my 2006, V8 4Runner, when I turn on the key all the gauge needles sweep back and forth about a half dozen times and finally settle back to where they should be except for the gas gauge. The needle on that gauge drops to below E and just stays there regardless of how much fuel in the tank. Guess I'll have to take it in to a dealer for diagnosis, 'cause I can't find anything obvious like a blown fuse. Any ideas?

Hmmm... my gauge needles light up first then followed by the text. But none of them do any sweeping, except the temp and fuel gauge, which just moves to the position representing temp (if engine is warm) and the amount of fuel in the tank, respectively.
So far the only Toyotas that I know of with the sweeping needles aren't actually Toyotas, but the Lexus IS250/350 and Scion tC.
Sounds like there might be a problem with the gauge cluster itself.

Yeah, the needles in all the gauges sweep back and forth 6 times before settling down. And, like I said, the fuel gauge needle parks below the E mark.
As far as the Lexus/Scion you mention, did the needles sweep multiple times? And if so, do you know what caused this?

Follow-up. Problem cause found.
Problem solved. Turned out to be the gauge cluster connector not making a complete connection. Apparently the cluster sections bolt together and the nuts had not been tightened adequately at the factory. The sections were slowly separating as the nuts loosened until it caused the connection with the PC board to separate and cause the erratic behavior of the gauges.
Bobby Rahal Toyota of Mechanicsburg, PA, very quickly found the problem and made the corrections while I waited. Great service department for anyone living in south-central PA or anywhere else for that matter.
