Gear shift knob change

Hi! I am new here, my t4r is a week old and I have 400 miles on it as of this morning.

Anyway, I hate the plastic-y feel of the gear shift knob. Has anybody changed it out, and what did you replace it with?

I put on a leather Momo tall shift knob that I got for my Birthday. It was made for a manual but works fine as it has universal allen set screws that hold it on anyways.They go for like 50-60 bucks. Just google "MOMO tall leather".I did'nt like the stock one either.
The black leather is almost a perfect match in color and texture to the 4Runner black leather.Anatomico Shift Knob

Karen - did you get the premium package? The SR5 w/ premium package gets a leather wrapped shift knob. If you have the cloth seats, it is not leather wrapped. You could probably buy the leather knob from Harper. It isn't anything fantastic, but I think it feels quite nice where your fingers wrap around the knob.*

The gear shift knob in my SR5 is actually coated in rubber - doesn't feel cheap to me at all.

Ok, I asked that a while back and did not really get responces, so this might be a good time. I HAVE the premium package but my shifter is NOT leather wrapped. It feels like plastic, i remember reading I get the leather shifter. Is yours leather? I would LOVE a close up pic of this, have not see one yet.

It is plastic where your palm is and the perforated leather (like the steering wheel) on the front side where your fingers would be. I'll see if i can snap a pic.

I replaced mine a few days avfter I picked my T4R up. The stock knob just didn't feel right in my hand. I went with a Monster Knob.. I used to hate round knobs but the feel so nice in my hand. The Monster Knob is nice since it doesnt get hot in the summer or cold in the winter. This is the 3rd car I've had one on and they work very well and fit and finish is excellent.

Yeah, mine is just like that pic, Quentin! I have a limited mag grey with black leather. The silver plastic overall on the dash and steering wheel is okay, but the plastic on the shift knob bothers me. The funny thing is, I really don't know why...

Harper, I like that one you posted! That is more like I want. I will do some searching.

Mine 'looks' exactly like that but the black feels like plastic, not softer leather. What does the standard SR5 one look like, without leather?

:iagree: I'd also be interested in buying a leather one, too, if someone does a swap. I'm like Westwind and have the leather but no leather shifter.

I bet we could order it through Toyota though. Anyone have a part number?

Take a look at this link: Anodized Billet Shift Knobs by Ellis Precision - Toyota FJ Cruiser Forum I know it's for the FJ Cruiser, but if anybody is interested maybe they can email/PM the guy and see if he'd make them for the 4Runner as well (they may already fit the T4R if Toyota uses the same diameter on the 4x4 shift levers).

Here's a pic of my SR5 without leather. Note that the ENTIRE shift knob is rubber. The piece on the front which is plastic available with leather is actually rubber on the SR5 without leather. Sorry for the poor quality of the pic.

ok.... here are a couple pics of mine, so far this is really the only thing to confuse me with the 4R....

To me the black part does not 'feel' like leather, too slick, no cushion to it. However, when I use my fingernail I can indent the black part, and it does return to shape. I am baffled at what I actually have. Obviously it is not plastic, but is it rubber or leather, how do you tell?

How does the Auto gear shift knob come off and if it is threaded on does anyone know the thread size so I can buy a new one?

I comes off by unscrewing it. Lefty loosy ,righty tighty.There is not a jam nut to keep it tight.
The thread size is metric 8mm x 1.25.

Some shifter knobs,like the Momo I have, are universal and are held on by allen set screws.They are not threaded.
Aftermarket threaded ones can come loose and might not line up straight ahead.

A thing to take into consideration is the shifter shaft seems longer then normal. That's why I personally used a tall shifter knob which is designed like the stock one.Might look funny with just a ball sitting on a tall shaft.
