Gearing help/on a budget

Morning everyone!

Was just wondering if I could inquire about where I should look for a budget rear end gearing and a locker. I'm only gearing the rear end right now with being a college student on a budget I want to make sure I like what I'm getting and after doing my research and using a bit of common sense knowledge I will forgo using 4X4 for the time until I get the front re-geared to match or decide I would rather not.
While I have never built a complete 3rd member I have very quick to learn and am mechanically inclined otherwise.

So I was wondering for a budget, would it be easiest to just get the ring, pinion and find a locker? and would you recommend E-locker or Air? I realize air would require an air compressor but I'm not mad at the idea of on board air.
And secondly, who offers these individual parts at a relatively good cost, or if anyone's got any spare rear ends floating around up for sale!

You probably have 4.10 gears stock, but should check to be certain. There's tons of info on here about swapping in an e-locker - but they come in 4.30 so you would have to re gear the front to match.
ARB is a great option but it's not gonna be cheap.

You have to re-gear the front & rear at the same time unless you can find an E-Locked Tacoma TRD with 4.10s in the junk yard. They're pretty common. That would be your cheapest. Second cheapest would be an E-locked 4.30 4runner from the junk yard.

Personally I wouldn't waste my time with 4.10's & go for the 4.30. If I were you, I'd save my money & get 4.88's from ECGS, even its a year from now, do it right the first time.

First question I would ask is whats the reason for regearing? I'm running 285s with the stock 4.10s and automatic tranny with zero issues.

Second, regearing requires some special equipment and knowhow. I wouldn't risk a brand new set of gears learning how to regear.

My recommendation: keep an eye on Craigslist, offroad forums, etc for a 3rd member for sale with the gearing you want. They do come up once in a while. Once you have the front, just take the front to get regeared.

To answer your question, Yukon ring/pinion gears and a Detroit locker. The elocker would require you to swap in the entire rear end. Or modify your existing housing.

The more I look the more I'm leaning towards just going new from ECGS or Marlin Crawler has some good things going on as far as build kits for 4.88 and an automatic locker to match as well for under 1,000. Even though the junk yard route would be nice to experiment with third members and regardless if I ever came across an e-locked Tacoma rear end I would rip it out just too have laying around.

I would prefer to do least modifying to the third member as possible.

I just purchased an e-locker axle with e-locker so I wont have to modify my housing. Plus it's from down south so its rust free. Look at Marlins site for the other types of lockers. For the mechanical lockers no mods should be needed. An air locker will need to be drilled & fitted for the air hose.
 
I had a buddy of mine offer up a 01 suburban rear axle for a project housing. Obviously I would gear and locker the 8.4 but would having a larger diff in the rear affect the 8" diff in the front even if I regear to match? I would also assume transitioning suspension parts as well but at least it's still a 6 lug axle. Just wondering anyone had any info to offer
 
Some 4Runners have the 4.10 gears in an elocker stock. I believe the manuals came that way. You just have to find one and they're usually a pretty penny and hard to come by.

To swap a 4.10 elocker 3rd member out of a tacoma you need the housing from an elocker 4Runner or modify your own housing.

Swapping a suburban rear axle is going to be a lot of fabrication work.

I would not suggest regearing only the rear and waiting to do the front. That makes no sense to me. Your truck is useless while you have different gears front and rear. Wait and do both at the same time if money is tight right now.
 
Forget that Suburban axle. For starters it's weaker than what you already have. It's also quite a bit wider.
