I'm not a fan of HID. I have had nothing but problems with them.

What brand? I previously used the "holy grail" Morimoto HIDs and had nothing but problems with nonstop warranty claims every 4-6 months.

Switched to Philips bulbs/Xenon Depot in 2016 and have never had so much as a flicker.

Ok, it finally arrived. Because it arrived late I’ll have to install it tomorrow. Here are some pics. I’m not 100% sure if this is the gen2 but from the case label it does say V2 (version 2). Maybe someone can confirm? More to come peeps!

Those are indeed Gen 2 lights as the part number is different than mine. Good luck! I may go back to OEM if mine fail again. It’s a pain working around a winch bumper, fender flares, and a light bar just to change out a headlight.

I probably have warrantied 5-6 pairs of Morimoto ballasts through TRS over the years. I finally had enough and bought Denso ballasts when I retrofitted my F150 headlights. Those heat up super fast and never, and I mean NEVER, flicker. I have heard that the new Morimoto ballasts are nice though, and the Morimoto bulbs are pretty good as well.

Ok installed. Everything went in smoothly and under the hood is nice and clean. I’ll wait until night fall to test it.

Looking good please adjust the headlights before driving. Cant wait to see if they fixed the beam pattern issue.

I thought I was the only one. I warrantied 3 pairs of ballast back to back as the new ones that would come in immediately would act up. I bought through the retrofit source so I had them send me another brand and I had no issues. Never even considered these morimoto headlights due to the issues I saw once people started receiving them. I went with alpharexs luxx series led headlights and 6 months in no issues.

Please note that I didn’t have the chance to adjust them (anyone could totally tell from the pics) and there was some lingering fog. Overall my impression was “ its ok” so I’ll try to adjust them tomorrow and try it again.

Thanks for putting these up so quick for us. You can tell that the headlights definitely need to be aimed up a bit. However, it looks like the beam pattern is very similar to the V1 in terms of side coverage with a slight improvement. Bummer, was hoping these would knock it out of the park.

I still haven’t seen reliable beam shots of the Alpharex Nova series but it looks like both the Nova and the Morimotos have poorer lighting performance vs a stock projector with an HID bulb drop in. Looking forward to seeing how the new OEM headlights pan out

Agreed. There is a slight improvement compare to gen 1. Will have to wait for OEM LED headlights from 2021 4runner and see if that makes a difference.

Granted 4R aftermarket is not as good as Jeep, but 10+ years of installed base seems like a great opportunity for other manufactures of headlights to jump into. JW Speaker with heating elements would part me with my money pretty fast.

I seriously doubt the 2021 Toyota update will be better than what I have now. And likely need upgraded bulbs to an already high, or very high, price.

Just bought my daughter a ‘20 Honda Civic Sport Touring hatchback with their LED headlights, wow!

LED lighting is very directional vs. the omnidirectional lighting coming from halogen and HID bulbs. So I would be really surprised if your current setup matched the performance of a headlight with proper LED projectors.

Sorry I'm a bit of a lighting nerd because I have diagnosed night vision blindness. So lighting is pretty critical for me. It's important that people have the right info. I agree on your point on OEM LED lighting getting really really good. We have a set on our BMW X3 and its fantastic and makes driving at night much easier.

Great point. I am not sure why JW speaker is not in the market for Toyota.

I mean how hard is it to make a good headlight housing that provides a good beam pattern? I just drove a 2020 Audi A4 with adaptive LEDs! ow man. The brightest I have ever seen! They project very far down the road. Wide beam pattern.

You are absolutely right, no argument. What I have is not ideal. I guess really my point was that despite the less than ideal solution I am running it seems like it is close to what I am seeing on the new headlights. When in fact the correct lens for LEDs should blow mine away. But honestly without a side by side test with the same camera nothing definitive can be concluded.

Plus let’s face it, it doesn’t take much to improve the stock output with any bulb type with higher output.

Would love to be convinced that these new headlights are worth it.

I think my priority right now are the rears. The stock running lights are not very bright either. I drive up into Wyoming in the winter and run into severe weather. I came up on another 4R pretty fast because the rear running lights where not very visible in the thick weather conditions. I installed Baja S2s in the rear with red lens to run as rear fogs after that. Thinking the newer Anzo with sequential turns, but that is another topic for another thread.

Yeah I’ll try adjusting them and take it for another test. Right out of the box the beam was pointing lower than I expected. From all the pics of the gen1 , I do noticed that the gen2 light beam spreads out a little more. Is it better than my wife’s X5 led? Hell no! I’ll let you guys know how it goes after the adjustments.
