General Grabber STX @ Walmart - anyone use these?

I just saw that Walmart is advertising the General Grabber STX at a great price. My tire size is 265/70/16 (stock).

For a set of four, $516 WITH road hazard, lifetime bal, etc., or $476 without. Given financial pressures, I'm not willing to dump $800+ into Michelin's like I've done in the past (currently have Mich Cross Terrain tires).

I can't find any info on the Grabber STX tires. I know they are private label tires for Walmart, but no info on the WM web page, and the General web page does not list them either.

Anyone know anything about them? Anyone already bought them?

BTW, I have kids in tow and drive 99% on pavement. I only "off-road" on rare occasion, but nothing extreme given stock SR5 suspension.

I care most about snow/ice/wet pavement control.

Yeah, I'm sure its a Grabber STX. Look at the pic below. You can see "STX" after the white letters of "Grabber."

Apparently made for Walmart only, so no reviews on Consumer reports, none on Tire Rack or Discount Tire. It looks like a decent tire, I'm just wondering if it has decent traction in snow, ice, and wet pavement. Great price - but that causes me some concern about quality.

I'm looking at the Walmart ad right now. It says its a "new" product being offered.

Tires

You may buy them cheaper, but you will replace them twice as often and with the cheaper ones you will not have as good a ride and the braking distance will be longer. You pretty much get what you pay for. I put top of the line michelin's on all my vehicles and get 80,000 miles and more on the regular tires and 50 to 55,000 on the ultra high performance tires. That is driving under normal conditions and I drive at a rather fast speed so the safety factor is better and I feel more comfortable.

At this price, i can buy two sets of tires (rated for 60k miles each) for the cost of one set of Michelin tires. Even if i only get 50,000 miles out of these tires, two sets will net me around 100,000 miles. The numbers work out just fine. :thumb3:

HOWEVER, I am only concerned regarding traction and control on wet pavement, snow and ice. :thanks:

This Grabber STX looks like the Grabber HTS, which is top rated by Consumer Reports in the May 2011 Consumer Reports annual auto issue. They listed "best tires" on pg. 12 as:

Grabber STX

I got a couple at Walmart here in Tulsa and they are nice tires so far. I couldn't find info. on them anywhere and e-mailed Gerneral Tire to see what the deal was. They said it was the Grabber HTS made for Walmart. Yes, the HTS was selected the best overall SUV tire by Consumer Reports several months ago. Great price.

Interesting enough, it seems I will be going with the Michelin M/S2 after all.

I had forgotten to check the refund I was due for only getting 42,000 miles out of my Cross Terrains being replaced. They are warrantied for 65,000. At 42,000 miles, two are at 3/32 and two at 4/32. Tire guys at Costco said I would get $62/tire.

Factor in the "tax" paid back to me on the credit, and Costco's $70 off Michelin coupon going on, when the numbers all fell out, my new set of LTX M/S2's will cost me $568.00 OUT THE DOOR. That price also includes Mount/bal, road hazard, & lifetime rotation. The only draw back is if I ever cancel my costco membership I'm screwed.

I sometimes hate how busy Costco gets, but yet again, I'm buying another set of tires from them because this price makes it a no-brainer decision.

I'll be getting my new tires next week.

Also consider how many miles a year you'll be putting on the tires since an 80,000 mile tire for me would simply be silly since I only put a max of 5000 miles a year so I would never reach that and tires are only good for about 7-8 years before they are getting old.

General Grabbers from walmart

Just an FYI

I just purchased a set of four tires and so far I am really impressed. (its only been 5 Days)
I put them on my 08 Escape and from the moment Idrove out of the lot Wow. A very smooth ride. I hand continental contitrac on there before and they lasted 144,000 kms. great tire. But the ride with these tires has never been better. So much smoother and more comfortable as well as less road noise.
I had two ver abrupt stops and the stopped quick. A little loud on the emergency stop, but who cares. I won't know until winter how they do on ice
but so far I am impressed.

Big O XT

No complaints on my Big O XT'S, great warranty, wear and performance- high desert, snow, rain, rock & gravel. Average noise level comparable to like-kind AT tread. I would recommend putting them on your short list for consideration.

Grabber STX

I have a set of them on my 07 Crew-Max Tundra, 275/55-20. I like them. Actually a quiet comfortable ride. Havent had them in the snow yet as Mississippi isn't exactly snow belt area like back home... They do really well on wet roads and handle the rough roads well too. I've had only one issue with one of the tires and it looked like I ran something over because the sidewall blew out while I was on vacation in Michigan. I took it as a sign to stay in Dundee and visit Cabelas in the morning. Ran the truck into Toledo where they had a new tire for me and because it didn't look like a manufactures defect (two 3" cuts in the sidewall without any jagged edges) and I had just over 25% tread where It was prorated. But over-all I like them. I also haul a marching band trailer loaded with instruments including the pit. Hope this helps.
