General Highway Gas Mileage w/Rack & Light

17 city/ 21 hwy(usually 70-75 MPH at most), first-gen, 22RE, 5-speed manual with a kayak on rack.
17MPG hwy on modern vehicles with advanced electronic engine management? What have Toyota engineers been doing?

More like what has the EPA and our gov been doing with the increasingly restrictive emissions laws.
A first gen isn't even allowed to be compared to a 5th gen. So simple and durable, removable top, no air bags, etc...wish I had a first gen.
The first gen is also waaay lighter than a 5th gen.
The first gen could be had with a manual, better on gas than our only choice, the auto. It's amazing we can get 17mpg when you really think about it.
