By purchasing a black rig I have committed to waxing it every time I wash it but I was shopping around for the best wax out there (who isn't?!) Being in rainy WA I would like to find some that has a "RainX" effect, any ideas?

all comments needed, wanted, and appreciated :reddance:

Use Collinite 845. But you won't wax it after every time you wash unless you wash very infrequently.

However, Optimum Spray wax is definitely doable after every wash to keep the Collinite lasting longer.

Good luck with black. You'll need it.
 
I use Griots Garage "Best in Show" sealer, wax and quickwax on my black Limited. If you don't have one yet, a random orbital is a great tool to have when waxing. Saves a boatload of time and uses less product.

I use the sealant twice a year (before summer, before winter). I wax every time I wash the car and use the spray wax to touch up (like after removing bird poop) and when I clay-bar the truck. The Speedshine is great for that too.

I can't see how waxing every time you wash would be worth any marginal benefit. I personally wax a few times a year. At minimum I would do a spring coat after you clay bar the winter grime off of the paint and fall before winter arrives. I used Meguiar's Ulimate Liquid Wax a few weeks ago and was happy with the results. It doesn't stain plastic so the application is very quick and can be wiped off after just 5 minutes on the paint. I will probably do 1 more coat on my next wash to have the extra layer of protection from bugs on our summer road trips.

I would suggest taking the products mentioned here and researching them to draw your own conclusion. Autogeek is a pretty thorough resource for detailing info. Good luck.

You shouldn't just wax your car every week. Other then being a PITA, you will be just waxing over and "sealing in" contaminants in your paint.

If you really want to protect your black paint from scratches, swirls, contaminants, and have amazing rain-x like water sheeting properties, you should look into Opti-Coat 2.0 from Optimum Polymer Technologies (AKA: Opti-Guard, Optimum Ceramic Coat)

Basically it is a 2ml thick permanent clear coat applied over your factory clear coat. It will reduce the chance of scratching and swirling, and actually lessens the damage of rock chips. And if it does get scratched...you can polish out the scratches without even touching your factory clear. Plus, it beads water like crazy. You apply it once, and you never have to worry about it again. Maybe a light clay and polish every year, but nothing like the maintenance you would have to do if you wanted to wax your car a few times a year. You can also apply it over your headlights so they don't yellow over time, like most plastic headlights do. After having Opticoat on my last car, I never want to own another car without it!

If you have experience detailing, you can probley do it yourself, or find a pro to install it for you.

I installed it myself on my last car, and I would probley do it myself again to my 4Runner, but I don't have the time any more....I found a pro detailer that will apply it for me for $350! It is hard to find a good detailer, but I finally did, the guy is more anal then I am! He also normally details Ferrari, Bentleys, BMWs, ect, so I think I can trust him with my car. This includes a full exterior detail, which is what is needed for prep.

Opti-Coat 2.0

Do some research on it, there is a TON of info out there on it, also visit auto geek's website and forums, like Jayceep said. There is alot of good educational info there on how to properly care for your car's paint.

I bought the turtle wax black box. It took some time to apply by hand but that was 2 months ago and water still beads up like the day I waxed it. Get gloves though, I still have black wax and polish on the sides of my fingernails that won't come off. Of course this is a cheap alternative, I'm sure there are much higher quality options out there.
 
Collonite is good stuff. I've used it before and it typically lasts 3-4 months even during our rainy fall/winter.

But I second Whiplash Willy's recommendation of Opti Coat. I've used it on my last several vehicles and it rocks!
You apply the coat once and never have to wax again (unless you polish the coating off).
Water beads ridiculously well, it's super easy to clean and offers mild protection from light scratching. You still need a good wash technique though.

I've had my 4runner less than a month and I've already Opti Coated it. :)

What he said. Collinite is the way to go.
 
Waxing every time you wash is overkill, IMO. I do my vehicles once a year, but a spring/fall schedule is probably a good idea. If you want to go above and beyond, quarterly is the most I'd spend my time on.
 
I don't think you'll enjoy owning a black vehicle by the time you have it one year if you wax it every wash, unless you hardly ever wash it. What I try to do is wash myself or touchless car washes. Also I have heard fukken wax makes it really shine and is waterless (I think?) but I'm not really sure as if its the best thing out there. I would assume a quarterly wax would be enough though.
 
I have a black '12 LE, and many of the suggestions here are very good.

I've personally used the Wolfgang Trio with excellent results (Wolfgang Total Swirl Remover, Finishing Glaze, and Sealant).

In between washes i use the Optimum no rinse wash as a quick detailer, and it's really worked out well.
