Getting 2013 TE. Suggestions?

<<<<

Senior Member
I need help from 5th gen owners. In few month I'll be getting new 2013 Trail Edition with KDSS. Any suggestions about dealer options or anything else? My 4th gen is staying in the family since it's modified and worth more to me than to the dealer. I'd miss in-glass antena, inside gas door opener and autostart, but I like the way new Runner handles and stops (great brakes). Any suggestions welcome.

I'd realy like 285/70/17's Nitto Terra Graplers or BFG, but will those fit without lift? Will dealer install those?
pretty sure they will fit, but really stuff the wheel-wells without a lift. are you planning to lift? if so, i can totally appreciate upsizing right out of the gate; if not, consider sticking with 265s—an aggressive AT or MT tread pattern really changes the look. and performance. check out Nathan's (idrivaT4R) early build photos with stock size 265 Firestone MTs.

Oh btw you are going to absolutely fall in love with your TE!
I bet. I'm thinking silver with black clading. Mods: no lift but big tires that will fit (sleeper), TRD or after-market wheels, full skid plates, on board air, auxilary air horn (just for kicks;) and then some engine, intake and exhaust stuff later. I wonder if dealer will trow in TRD wheels without charging my bottom line?

Remember bigger tires means less torque...

I'd have it covered by opening up intake and exhaust and some engine upgrades. But even in stock form torque should be sufficient in 4LO for big hills. My towing will be limited to ocasional home improvement store lumber or several bags of top soil.

Right now you can only do one thing with what's available out there and that is to re-gear. Later in 2013 a supercharger should be introduced and if history is any indication it will be around 5-6K.

Opening up intake will do you no good without opening up throttle body. Only way to open exhaust side is to run complete new exhaust including headers as there are six catalytic converters I believe. Engine upgrades are extremely limited. You basically get what you have.

I'll keep it stock under the hood until something new is out. Is there any big brake upgrade for 5th gen out there?

I don't believe so, definitely not by TRD anyway. The OEM brakes will stop you in a hurry.. not to mention if they were any bigger you would need new wheels, as the current ones barely clear our brakes. If you want better braking the only reasonable mod would be some high performance brake pads. Past that you'd be spending an easy 4 grand. Congrats on the new truck

".....Later in 2013 a supercharger should be introduced and if history is any indication it will be around 5-6K....".

I'm not at all familiar with Toyota's "Supercharger Design scheme", but there have been other, similar such designs in the past, that boasted some respectable H.P., Dynamometer readings in the engine's "Midrange" power curve....but not with-out consequence.

Some suffered, poor-off-the-line-torque. Some, general engine and oil system overheating issues due to "Conduction/Convection" over heated intake/exhaust manifold vortex', poor turbine chassis cooling, and insufficient out-board oil line feed velocity. And now, with a complete aluminum engine block/heads....who knows?!!

I know that was yrs ago; just hoping modern technology has done away with these prohibitive, motor destroying factors***"There is NO FREE LUNCH!!

Have the dealer throw in some better rubber and pull the running boards off for you - it'll save you the trouble later. I even managed to get my dealer to throw in the lift as part of the deal as well - I might've caught the sales lady on a good day or just lucked out with using my boyish charm, but it's worth a shot nonetheless!

LOL, I'll work on the charm part because I want 5 TRD wheels and Nitto TG Tires which all could easily cost around $ 4,000.

I just replaced my terra crappers.....3 out of the 4 tires were hard to balance and the steering wheel shook at 55mph. :girl:

If you want a really great, albeit noisy and super expensive tire, go with some Nitto Mud Grapplers. I had a real love/hate relationship with the set I had on my Tundra. They were unstoppable in mud, great in snow, good on ice, and I got around 85,000km out of them (no joke!) Only problem was they cost over $600 per tire and they were so loud that it sounded like a P-51 Mustang was running in your backseat. I'd buy them again, but definitely not on a daily driver.
