Getting new (used) 4Runner.

Hello,
I am in a process of shopping for a new 4Runner (currently have 1996 4x4 3.4L 4runner).
I am looking for 4x4 models probably with V8.
The info I have right now tells me that all 4Runners with V8 have AWD system, so you can not disengage out of 4x4? And 4Runners with V6 (4x4 models) you can choose between 4 or 2 wheel drive. Is this truth?
And another question: owners of V6 with experience to pull 3500 Lbs trailer (I have a boat) how you would rate your towing abilities? Does V6 have enough in it so you do not feel underpowered?

Yes the V8 is full-time 4wd and the V6 can select 2wd. The V6 is rated to tow 5K lbs and the V8 is rated to tow 7K lbs. The 2wd V8 is rated to tow 7300 lbs.

V6 has enough oomph to tow that easily... I tow a 21'+ boat about 4200-4500 lbs with trailer, gear and 4 people in the car with no sweat.

V6 is rated to tow 5000 with the weight carrying hitch. You can always remove that hitch and add the weight distributing hitch for more towing capacity if needed (as recommended by Toyota). With this setup, the V6 can tow 7000 lbs (V8 is 7300 lbs). The only thing I added to mine was an external tranny cooler (same as on the V8's) to the tune of about $150 including 1 hour labor and parts/fluids. No problems whatsoever.

I have towed a few times with my 04 v6 and I thought it was very capable. I was moving all of my bedroom funiture and packed boxes in a 5x10 trailer. I guess it weighed around 3,000 pounds plus the 4runner itself was full as well. It felt very secure and I didn't think there was a drastic loss of power. I was able to drive a consistent 75 mph and pass the slower traffic without having to plan to far in advance. My overall milage didn't suffer too badly as well and I think I averaged around 15 mpg.
