Give Your Opinion: Top 5 Mods?

Seriously?
1. Tires
2. High Lift Jack
3. Block and Tackle
4. Really Good Boots
5. Work Gloves

Tires so you don't flat as much and get better traction
High lift for when you get in a precarious position and have to use item 5.
Block and tackle works every time. Winches don't.
Really good boots for when the stuff above won't work and you have to hike out to get help.
Work Gloves help tremendously when stacking rocks...

If I could only have five items and those items were to help you go off road those are what I would take. I'm pretty sure that with the above items there would be very few places I couldn't take my TE. Now, some places would take quite some time to cross but eventually I could do it.
I like your approach, and yes that is how we used to do it! With a come-along and pry bars we did okay.

2. High Lift Jack
3. Block and Tackle (3 fold purchase), Come-Along
4. Really Good Boots
5. Work Glovesd

Considered listing nearly the same but included a shovel and a jump start pack, I didn't cus of the notorious "mod" word...

um... 14 day water supply?
Filter, purification tablets, UV purification gadget (haven't tried this one yet), 5-8 gallons constantly rotated on board. It's cold, too, cause I have a real fridge :flipoff:

I'm more worried about running out of beer. I often find myself places where real beer is many hundreds of miles away.

What! you don't consider 3-2 pooh good beer? :loco:

Number 1: Lockers...this is with stock everything (including tires):

Toyota TE on Richland Rd 2014 - YouTube

Once rear locker was engaged it walked right up this slick trail.

For MUD, yes the rear locker is great. But for rock crawling like that the atrac does just fine in most situations. Sometimes better than a locker. Tires would make a much bigger difference.

Lockers would be nice front and rear for finesse, but I would not put it in the top 5 since all 4x4 5th gens have atrac. I did not think it would really work myself.

Like most others I would say.
1. Tires (bigger is better for offroad, hurts onRoad)
2. mild lift/suspension
3. HiLift + recovery kit
4. Skids
5. Onboard air / tire deflators

Agreed. I have been thoroughly impressed with A-Trac. Having owned vehicles in the past with lockers as well as experiencing Land Rover's offroad traction system (very impressive) in my own. The new Toyota A-Trac is really top notch and has performed better than Land Rover's in my experience (but they are both the best in the industry).

That said, in most situations, locker's are still better for the environment our tires are making contact with which is an important thing for those of us who "tread lightly" (we all should).

Some people might say that with better tires you wouldn't have needed the locker. I know lots of guys who do pretty challenging trails with good tires and no lockers. If you have a TE, great. If not, lockers are a much later mod to do. And as for people suggesting getting a front locker, you better know what you're doing with it or you'll be replacing tie rods.

The original question was what top mod(s) would you add to a 2014 SR5. I don't believe you can add ATRAC to a SR5, but over my many years with different vehicles a rear locker always made the biggest difference...much more than better than standard SR5 tires as a single mod...that being said the true answer is to trade the SR5 for a TE, lol

You can't add ATRAC, it's standard equipment.

Actually you are only half right, but it is not standard equipment according to the 2014 (and 2015) brochure ... then online under 2015 Features & Specs it says it is "not available"...this is confusing at all, thanks Toyota:

Honestly, I would go the other way. In rock, I prefer lockers every single time. I try to avoid mud at all cost, but if I have no choice, I'm going to carry some momentum, and A-TRAC only works with wheel spin.

Heh, I got the tires, lockers, and I have no idea what I'm doing. I think I embarrassed some Jeepers yesterday when I drove around them and waved, while they were stuck on P Gulch.

To original question: OEM should be up to the challenge if you are asking the question.

Tires, armor, tools and spares, beyond that.

Yes, that was my point. In my video the rock was wet already from rain and having just gone thru the creek and a little mud using the rear locker (once engaged) allowed me to easily climb up the rock and stay on the chosen line over the obstacle. That is what happen immediately after the video ended.
