Gmrs radio

I picked up a Midland MXT275 gmrs radio and found it fits nicely in the console. I used the power outlet for power, and drilled a hole for the antenna. Works very well, made contacts at 17 and 25 miles away with the mxta26 +6db antenna

I like mine as well but never went that far for testing, good to know it works on repeaters at that range with the extended antenna.

Are you closing the center console door on the coil? does it close and stay shut?

Mine is in the glove box but not permanately fixed just Velcro down, so I can move it to other vehicles when needed, ghetto rig I know.

I did the same with my box but ran switched constant power and extended the mic to a homemade port in the tiny dash cubby. It’s a great set up having all the controls on the mic.

Mine is in the glove box but not permanately fixed just Velcro down, so I can move it to other vehicles when needed, ghetto rig I know.

Mine is Velcro as well for ease of removal and setup in a go box.

I actually used a dremel with a cylindrical grinding bit on the lid where the mic wire comes through between lid and console. The straight part before the coil is what comes through. I just leave the mic in the front cup holder currently.

Nothing wrong with that! I agree , all controls on the mic was honestly why I chose that model [emoji106]

Just got mine last week, still looking for mount + antenna. Are you using their 4R hood bracket? Does it still tilt forward or can it be easily bent back?

Trying to work a commo plan for the TuRD. GMRS is good for... A closed network? Are they used on the highway like CB radio in the olden days?

I use it in off-road groups and caravans on road. Has worked better for me than CB generally. Ive used both and gmrs is easier with good range. If you want to talk to truckers I suppose they still use CB. I occasionally got some entertainment on the CB but I’d rather listen to music.

How did you make the homemade port? I just ordered the radio and I'm looking to do the same.

Just drill a hole in the back of that cubby and run an extension cable from the radio in the center console under the console to behind the dash and through the hole in the back of the cubby. Could probably do this without removing the entire center console by drilling some holes and tucking the extension cable under the sides of the console leading to the dash, but I pulled mine out when I did it.

That's the mounting bracket for the radio. It comes with it.

GMRS is pretty affordable, and if you're going to be legal, the license is for a family and not an individual like HAM. Distance isn't quite what HAM is, but there are more and more repeaters popping up all over to help with that. Seems to be a better, clearer, and further reaching option over CB.

But none of this matters if you're going with a group that has something else. I haven't installed a mobile radio of any kind yet because of this. I do have my HAM license, and there are reasons I like HAM, but I have a couple of GMRS handhelds for going exploring with my kids. Only problem is distance with handhelds... not too far.

I've run ham previously and planned on doing the same with the 5th gen. Decided to skip a permanent ham installation and install the Midland MXT275 instead because of the benefits described above and because I feel it is going to be more useful when going with groups (much easier to adopt than ham). I'll keep a couple of UV-5R's in the rig in case I run into others who only have ham. Skipping CB altogether.

i have the midland mxt 275 installed on my center console molle panel with the provided magnet mount on the roof for the time being. i am going to install it in the glovebox and run the antenna cable from the roof through the hatch, etc. I am having trouble finding the proper antenna mounting bracket for the 10-13 TE roof rack, so I am waiting to find what I need before installing permanently. also need to decide between the 3db ghost and the 6db whip...

I plan to run the antenna cable on the passenger side bc of location of the glovebox. I think it should work out just fine.

Looks like a great easy clean out of the way spot, i may have to try it. I wanted to run both speakers so i went with a less stealth install. The nice thing about the MXT275 is its so easy to mount in different places.


Ony custom thing i did was use parts from my sons erector set to mount the mic.
