Gobi rack and skis

Hey there. I'm finally ready to pull the trigger on a gobi rack. Trail duty offers the ranger and the stealth. I know most people go with the stealth but I am wondering which is better for skis. I would need two cross members for skis but the photo on the trail duty website does not show the top that well. Your input would be greatly appreciated.

I think I will go with the Stealth unless feedback from your query turns up a better reason to go with the Ranger. I can clearly see the cross bars on the Gobi Racks site, but will order through Trail Duty for extra goodies.

I just called them up and Yakima Ski racks can attach to the two crossmembers on the Stealth rack. Just a little hint if you are going to order, they are offering the ladder and wind deflector with free shipping. Also type in Gobi100 for $100 off. Not a bad deal IMO.

I ordered the Gobi without the rear cross bar. I wanted to have more "flat" cargo area for hauling things that were longer. For example, my pop up canopy sits inside the basket vs. on top of cross bars. There is also more versatility with using aftermarket cross bars.

Great point Duc. Forgot I could get aftermarket crossbars. I need to reevaluate my year round needs before I buy.

You do have a good point and it sounds tempting but spending an additional $300 on railgrabs and crossbars is a bit more than I wanted to spend. (I know, I just spent $1350 on a roof rack)

Have you considered http://www.toyota-4runner.org/5th-gen-t4rs/152757-fs-5th-gen-full-length-roof-racks-drabbits.html? It's hundreds less, and the crossbars are adjustable and removable. I had a yakima snowboard rack attached to it a few weeks ago and it worked like a charm.

That's helpful Kenski, I was wondering what a good way to hold snowboards is and have already PM'd Drabbits to get in line for one of those things since they are BAD ASS!

Stupid question but if you have a full roof rack is it also possible (or maybe I should say even remotely a good idea) to just jerry-rig the boards down onto it directly if you didn't want to spend another $140 on the Yakimas? Or would it just be downright silly, apart from looking strange?

If you happen to have a pic of the boards on the Yakima on your Drabbits, I'd love to see it!

I did consider it for awhile actually. I was close to pulling the trigger but I got a pretty good deal on the gobi and went with that. It also helps that gobi is in Colorado if I feet need anything.

I wouldn't personally worry about the crossbars. They were in the perfect location for all the snowboards I haul. And for my uses they aren't in the way to haul other stuff. Really the only other couple things was some beach chairs and the huge cornhole boards I built on the way to the beach and then a couple 12' paddle boards at the beach.

Bringing this thread back from the dead but I, too, am wondering. I just ordered the Gobi Stealth Rack. Was wondering why people also mount a dedicated ski/snowboard rack to their box roof racks. I was planning on using a cable lock and tie downs for the 5.5hr drives to Mammoth Mtn.
