I've had my 5th gen basically since they existed and I remember when Gobi released the design. It has been almost a decade and the lead times are still just as bad. Not even one improvement in service or reduction in lead time. I just ordered my Gobi 2 weeks ago because I knew if I got something else I would not be happy.

. I suppose there still is hope for me. Pretty unacceptable with this lack of communication though. Do they just ignore all emails and phone calls but just ship it when it's ready. I will be away from home weeks 16-18 and this thing can't sit in my front yard.

The stories on here about incorrect lead times and communication issues is all that's keeping me from ordering one myself
What's hilarious is that there are people on here that defend companies like Gobi with their garbage customer service.. Like, serious knights in shining armor that come to their aid when they are badmouthed. It baffles my mind.. Some of them were even past business owners.. Then again, maybe why they are past business owners...

With long lead time,lack of communication, I would still order. Gobi is The rack to get. Is well thought out,built well and aesthetically complements the roofline of the 4Runner. Seen limos where they have flat roof in the middle,looks stupid. I've seen flat aluminum racks, dam are they ugly. They look like extended ladders. As for Bajarack ,it sits too high and that metal fairing at front, did they form that from a fat dowel or the rack itself.

I personally do not care to support a company that clearly gives zero f**** about their customers.
I'd buy a used one, sure..
To me - customer service is to be factored in with my purchases. It doesn't have to be great, but being so notoriously terrible that it's laughable won't quite cut it for me.
To each their own, but maybe if less people continue perpetuating the cycle, they might improve?
In fairness to Gobi, I don't think it is that they don't care but that they don't understand how to logistically keep up with the volume of orders they get - incompetence over malice, IMHO. It isn't easy to deal with the logistics of a large number of orders, manufacturing processes, delays, issues, etc.
That said, it isn't any less frustrating. I was told I would get a call back yesterday and it never happened - again. Basic stuff. :frusty:
I also think it is perfectly fair not to support the company over these issues, but I didn't know about the problems before I ordered and I suspect others are in a similar boat. I am surprised that a company that has been around as long as Gobi still has these issues.

Sorry, I missed this question before. Look up Joe at Outgearsolutions (on Instagram) from SolCal for the same style rack. Awesome guy, does 5th gen sliders too. I am paying for shipping to NW Ohio but still saving a ton of time, and money.
I do know local guys too but the style is what I was looking for. (5-6 week ship time!!!)

Read back a few pages to get an idea. I ordered mine on the 11th, and yes it takes some effort to talk to a human (hint, select 1 for sales and 2 for customer support is the same person, but the second call usually gets answered haha) but I was told ~4weeks (as compared to 6-8 by using a third party vendor). When I got my confirmation e-mail it said 8/25 delivery? Okay, that is 6ish weeks but given what I was told I called back and they agreed to uphold their verbal statement and later that day I got a new e-mail with expected delivery date of 8/11.
I like the look better, and the service better, and look forward to hanging this off the truck soon.
I agree with your qualms about [lack of] customer service and I've seen multiple auto-parts vendors on forums get absolutely obliterated by not being able to keep up with demand volume. The problem is that Gobi has seemingly destroyed the competition using cease and desists or some other means. Otherwise, I'm sure they would have gone under like a lot of other vendors do.
I WANT to like other available racks like Baja or EZ-Awn or Prinsu or whatever but unfortunately the Gobi hits a ton of check marks (for my needs) that none of the others do:
- Great aesthetics
- Basket style
- Lots of accessories
- Out-of-the-box adaptability to Thule/Yakima accessories (as opposed to Baja or the others where you have to spend another $100+ to mount those kinds of things)
- No drilling required
Again, it'd be great if Gobi wasn't a shit-ass company logistics/customer-service-wise, but there aren't a whole lot of comparable options. There are other OPTIONS, but they're not comparable. By the time I outfit a Baja flat rack with the things I need to make it comparable, it's much more expensive and isn't a basket-style rack (I know they have them, but they're hideous and crazy tall).
I'm planning to at least talk to some local fabricators to get an idea of how much it might cost to have someone fabricate me one of my own design which matches closely to Gobi. Unfortunately, I need to do a little digging to figure out how to have a fairing created and have the front feet work without drilling (and also determine what I would do for additional accessory mounts in the future).
But I guess as long as the customer knows what they're getting into with lead times and lack of communication, then, eh, what can ya do?

I ordered my ladder on the 7th. Was quoted by Trail Duty 4weeks. So hopefully I get mine sometime next.
