Going Bigger - 5th Gen Tire Fitment Guide

love the wider stance. truck does feel more stable at speeds.
285/75r17. think i'm approximately 3" lift in front, -8mm offset wheels, and 32mm spacers. total -40mm offset.

bmc, hammered pinch welds. caster +3 or more. relocating my lca pivots 1" forward soon

Rayofsi, since you have a set up close to what I want I figured I’d ask you for your input.

I just bought my first 5th gen T4R ORP and I’m about to order some wheels for it but I’m stuck between 17x8.5 0 offset vs 17x8.5 -12 offset.

I have a set of some Falken Wildpeak AT3s coming in 285/70R17 and I have a kings 2.5 mid travel kit with SPC UCA in the house ready to be installed.

My question is if you think my SPC UCAs will afford me sufficient caster adjustment to avoid doing a BMC if I go with the -12 offset wheels?

If anyone else has accomplished this lmk. I’ll likely order tomorrow morning but I figured I’d ask haha.

Thanks.

many people run 285/70 without bmc. Fingers crossed. hah

I am new to posting and haven’t figured it all out yet. I appreciate the detailed introduction about tire fitment of the original posting.

I have a new 2020 Toyota 4Runner TRD Off Road Premium with KDSS. I had a 2002 SR5 until traded up for the 2020 model.

As I am very new to all this aftermarket modifications I have been reading a lot on this forum. I recently purchased upgraded undercarriage protection.

Now I want to lift my 2020 4Runner TRD off-road with KDSS. I would like a 2 to 3 inch suspension lift. I’m into functionality over bling bling. With the new lift, I would like to get at least 33 inch off road tires.

Do others have thoughts on using stock 4RUNNER fifth generation TRD off-road 17 x 8 factory wheels with 33 and possible 35 inch tires? The tire fitment guide earlier said it did not recommend going over 33 inches and I understand the reasoning now.

The standard TRD off-road wheels are about 8 inches wide versus 7.5 inches wide for the TRD pro model. They don’t look as cool as the TRD pro model, but are they more functional being 8 inches wide? They are a lot cheaper to pick up used as an extra set of rims to mount larger off for road tires on them. I would change out TRD off road rims with 33 inch aggressive tires for trips into the dirt and rocks.

If I’m going to use the rims for off roading and they’re going to get scratched up possibly why not use the less expensive TRD off-road rim model then the more expensive stock TRD pro or aftermarket rims?

I welcome any suggestions so I can help educate myself.

Thanks

Hi All,

Just as an FYI I recently fitted Cooper AT3 4S in 275/55 20 to my standard Limited wheels. Looks good, appropriate for winter and gravel roads and no rubbing.

That's all.
Tim

Did the same thing to my Limited as well (putting the 275/55 20 Coopers AT3 4s on), but did get some very slight rubbing, only in reverse when turning hard, nothing a heat gun and a little pushing couldn't fix though. Like these much better than the OEM Yoko's.

I don't know if this video has ever been shared, but it's a pretty good illustration of how a lift affects larger tire fitment and suspension travel on an IFS rig. It also addresses the realities of extended bump stops. Even if it's a Taco lol

That video makes it so clear, it should be required viewing before spending on any suspension upgrades.

Wow. So much info to digest! My head is spinning.

Does anyone just go to a tire place and show them a photo of someone else’s ride and say “I want this” and let them figure it out?

Debating between two wheel sizes and wanted some input from you all....

Currently have an Ironman 4x4 lift (3"F/2"R) on a 2016 Trail. Looking to upgrade tires to 285s (debating between Falken Wildpeaks or KO2) but my main question is the wheel offset/backspacing. I'm thinking of the Motegi MR150 and they have the following two sizes:

17x8.5 Backspace: 4.75 and Offset 0mm
17x8.5 Backspace: 5.46 and Offset 18mm

The whole offset / backspace still kind of confuses me but wanted to get everyone's opinions on which to go with? I'd like a wider stance for a more aggressive look but want to try to avoid BMC if possible. With these two offsets/backspacing what I am looking at? Which one is the wider stance? and will the wider stance require a BMC (I know it varies)?

First option 0 offset is your best bet.

Im putting on the daystar 2.5 leveling kit. Should i tell the alignment shop to put the caster all the way forward even if I’m running only stock tires and UCA’s?

New set up

I ran 18x9zero offset with 285 65 18 3 inch lift, fender lining trim and got rid of front mud guards, but was not happy with the look. I just put camburg control arms, body mount chop and 33/12.5/18's with same 18x9 and its looks much better. I will go bigger when these wear out.

Hi guys,

A lot of interesting info on this thread. I just bought a 2015 4Runner Limited. I'm thinking about replacing the 20 in wheels by 17 in ones. Can I use the P265/65R17 that fitted my now gone 4th gen 4Runner? Looking at the table below, I don't see any mention of aspect ratio 65 for 17 in wheels.

Also, I understand that switching to such tires would lessen my ground clearance by about 0,5 inches. Correct?

Thanks

Sorry for the bad pic... brand new member here, I'll get better with time...

How did that work out for you? It may impact steering/ride in a sloppy kind of way. An example of a vehicle with lots of positive caster is Mercedes, known for their “on center” steering feel.

IIRC the 4Runner runs out of clearance in front of the tire first. Asking a shop to give you negative caster may make it feel like it’s “all over the road”.
