Going rate to replace starter??

Dropping it off at the dealer in the morning. Has to be jumped to turn over otherwise it's "click click click." Any ideas on the going rate for this? Anything else i should have done while they're down there?

Easy fix... DIY 10 min in the driveway to swap it out.

Might check your grounds. Could be that your alternator failed, and that's why your battery is dead...

Thanks. I'll get a new battery. Any idea how long the starter last? Everything but the belt, battery (on second one now) and a ignition coil is original.

Edit: And an alternator.

Where do you live? When cold season starts the snaps can kill batteries around here. Sounds like yours is done.

always, always, always go get the battery checked at one of the places that do it for free. autozone, checker, oreilly, if nothing else.

if you can start your truck, unhook the battery and it keeps running, then it is the battery. if it dies shortly, it is the alternator.

the starter will be a problem if it won't attempt to turn over. i generally recommend changing out the positive lead to the starter before changing it out. 12 bucks max and it will be good for another 15+ years (never dealt with salt so don't quote me on that).


edit: there is no reason to 'drop it off at the dealer' for this, unless you are really uncomfortable with basic troubleshooting.

Great info. Temps were in the 30's last few mornings NC, when it began to act up. I'll troubleshoot it tomorrow morning and see what I find. Current battery is 3 years old.

that's a battery starting to fail. if you don't see the battery light in the dashboard, your starter is good. get a multi meter when you replace the battery and test the voltage if it's charging. if not charging, it's your alternator. not the starter.

Age doesn't matter much to me anymore, I have seen "brand new" batteries die in a year due to a cold snap. It comes down to quality, Les Schwab or Autozone cheapo's may not last much longer than a few years in colder climates or at all, better quality batteries might.

I'd like to say I know which ones are the "good ones" and which ones aren't, but it's hard to tell these days. I can say that the Toyota Tru-Start 84Month batteries seem to hold up pretty well, I think InterState makes those; so maybe some of the higher end stuff from Interstate should be good?

You are complicating this OP...

Don't change anything for the sake of changing it... aside from getting a diagnostic at a dealer for informational purposes/health check... just change the battery and go from there.

Chances are everything else is fine.

Not to bad either way, the V8 requires you remove the power steering pump first if I remember (you don't have to disconnect anything, just unbolt it and move it out of the way if I remember right).

I would look for a Denso alternator as those will be closest to factory, I believe Carquest sells them as do some of the shops like Autozone and NAPA.

Though honestly, I would have the battery tested and replaced if it fails and throw a DMM on the battery when the car is running, should see between 13~14v when the vehicle is running for a good alternator.
