Going to paint Sport wheels- Gray or Black?

I have a Silver Sport with the 17" wheels and I plan to paint them. I can't decide if I want to go with a Satin Black or a Hammered Black(actually kind of gray). Any thoughts? Just wondering if the Hammered finish would look bad on wheels?

I'd suggest painting a wheel or two with plasti-dip (matte/satin black in color). And then spray directly over that with hammered paint. Compare and see what you like best.

If you decide you like the hammered, continue with the other wheels. Spray plasti-dip first, then spray on the hammered finish. This way you can also peel it off if you wish.

If you decide you like the plasti-dip (satin/matte black) look, peel the paint off the wheel you sprayed with plasti-dip & hammered and repeat the plasti-dip only.

At most, this will take you 2 hours and 10 bucks to at least try out.

IMO I think plasti-dip black looks best with silver, EDIT: however I don't think I've seen hammered gray wheels on silver before. Post some pics if you try it (or photoshop it).

:iagree: if you can peel the plastidip off after painting that is the best thing to do.

You know I like the grey personally but am biased :fro:

Thanks for posting that Clean, i was going to. Mine are still holding up wonderfully, of course all I have done is put lots of miles on. But still very happy.

I'm glad to hear they are holding up well. I was wondering about that. I'm going to redo mine again when I get some time and do a hammered-type paint over the Plasti. :lasercannon: (paint) lol.

Nice icon lol. Just FYI, i didnt really get the hammered look that is on the cap of the paint can, however it is a nice Matte feel and look, as you stated before, practice on spare is the way to go.

If you really sprayed the can really thick it may "hammer" better just not sure.

I'm honestly leaning toward the dark gray hammered finish, but I was just worried that the "textured" finish might not look great on wheels. Thanks for the input thus far guys!

Sparky, how does that hold up with the PlastiDip? Seems that it would scratch/chip off pretty easily, but maybe I'm wrong. I PlastiDipped my emblems and it seems decently durable. I will be wheeling this thing some, so it needs to be somewhat durable. I know I can always touch it up if I get a scratch/scuff. SO, you do a coat or 2 of P.D. the simply put a coat of Hammered over it???

Holds up great so far, but I have just been on the road and rain for about 2000 miles. Since it is on the spare, i tried rubbing off etc, it seems pretty tough so far. No wheeling as of yet, did that the week before I sprayed. I think the paint should hold really good, since the plasti dip is slightly porous.

Yep exactly how I did it, took wheels off and cleaned really well. Placed some playing cards around the wheels and did roughly 2 thick coats of PD. Let dry for an hour or 2 and went back with 2 coats of paint.

Cool part about the PD, if it looks like you have sprayed to thick while wet, it ends up being even. PD on the center caps isnt the greatest but its hard to tell while on vehicle, problem is getting the PD againt the emblem, so I sprayed thick and it evened out.

The bottom three are all chops. Only the first picture with my wheels is actual wheels. I just cut out the wheels (both front and rear), then cut the lug holes and space between spokes, then placed them on top of their wheels in the pic. Then I duplicated that layer (with just wheels) twice and set different exposures for each layer of just wheels.
