Im going to upgrade my 97 4runner to new mud tires soon. I am for sure going to go with at least 265/75 16s. I am considering 285/75 16s as well. Will I need to do a lift to run the 285s? What kind of mileage can I expect with 285s? Right now it is bone stock, auto, v6. Also on the list eventually is a front bumper with winch and sliders. I want to make sure I still have plenty of power without haveing to regear. I do pull a duck boat around during duck season a lot but its not a big boat.
Going with mud tires. Opinions on size/mpg

I always suggest General Grabber AT2, although not technically a mud specific tire , it does mud well enough.

After doing some searching I realize I asked a very common question. Apologies.
It does look like ill be better suited with 265/75r16 tires. I did see some pictures of rigs with those tires. With and without lifts. If anyone would like to post some more, (especially with a winch bumper) post them on up!

Take from someone who just went from 285 KM2s to 265 Durtracs. Stick with 265s and look into Duratracs. They look like a mud but are considered an all terrains. Muds are going to be a load range e which makes them really stiff and heavy. You can get a load range c which is ideal for our 4runners. I can definitely tell a difference from going from 285s to 265s, the power is back and my MPGs are up to 18-20

Nitto Trail Grappler - 285/70/17 and I see a regular 17+ hand calculated on the highway as long as I don't drive like a jackass. 4.30 gears.
FWIW, I get the argument about running a C range tire like a Duratrac because it rides better. But we are all driving 12-18 year old SUV's that were adapted from a truck platform. I'd rather have a tire with a stronger sidewall, not one that just looks pretty, that will get me home vs. something that rides marginally better.

I run 265/75/16 maxxis bighorn tires and I love em mine is stock also..
Has anyone ran a Wild Country MTX? Pretty good looking tire at a good price.

I had 255/85-16 BFG KM2 on my last runner, averaged 19mpg with 5 speed & 3inch lift. Loved them. Current truck is getting 16 with 265 Duratracks with an auto & 2 inch lift. Will be putting 255 KM2 on it next week, will have to see if mpg picks up any with the taller / lighter tire.

Discount Tire Direct on ebay. They are always doing deals for $100 off 4 tire purchase. They are a good reviewed knock off tire. Lot of jeep guys run them and they get good mileage and tread wear.

I ran these in 33x12.50 on my Zuk buggy, they are Beasty. Can't speak to longevity, but they hook up great, and look mean. Normal MT road noise.
They are manufactured by Cooper, an they seemed like pretty good quality.

Listen, one tid bit of advice that I wish some one gave me: Don't sacrifice large tire size for maneuverability. I want the biggest tires I could possible fit (285/75/r17) but I got nitto's trail grapplers which fall ever so short of 35" (If I called them 35's there are some people on this forum that will go into an uproar). I have the toytec 3.5" suspension lift, and a 1" body lift as well as a ton of trimming, and I still rub like nuts! I wish I went with 275s. Yes some people don't have issues, but theres no guarantee until you have the tires on there and start driving. This is all just my opinion.
Has anyone bought from Simple Tire? It looks like they have pretty good deals. I can get the ElDorado MTZ sport, which is the same exact tire as the multi mile I linked earlier, for 598 shipped to my door. From what ive read, these tires are built by Cooper in Texarkana TX. I think thats what im going to go with. We will see how they last.

Yes we would freak out because they are exactly 33.8". No where near a 35 and yes they rub but 35's are way worse in that department.
This is exactly why I'm sticking with a 16" wheel. Im running the 305/70/16 which is still a 33" tall but a lot wider. I have very little rubbing issues at full flex and stuff. Mostly on the stock rear bumper which I need to upgrade anyways.

they are 34.09" as per the specifications on the companies website. :gun6: exactly .75" difference in diameter which is .375" bigger taller on each side
