Good iPhone app to monitor trans temp?

I don't really want to mount a SG or anything, but I'd like to see what my transmission temps look like, especially since I recently added my B&M trans cooler. I was thinking I could use one of those OBD2 things that transmits over Bluetooth, and could monitor on my iPhone.

Has anyone done this?

unfortunately the Torque app and it's Bluetooth connection were Android only...

I think for the iPhone, there are apps which communicate with the OBD dongle via wi-fi

Correct! You need a wifi dongle to work with the iPhone.
I had a kiwi bluetooth, and had to sell it after I got my iPhone.
The kiwi wifi, I think is $100 or so, but I do not have any familiarity with the apps for iPhone, I bought a scangauge....and am trying to figure out where to mount it...lol.

If you just want to measure tranny temps, I saw a pic somewhere around here where the OP mounted a real gauge just above his 4wd shift lever, it looked stellar!

Looks like its geared more towards making better driving habits, but it says it can read check engine codes so I would assume that it should be able to read everything. I would look into it, as its a decent price and apple sells it so it should work like advertised.

Displaying trans temp VIA a scanner if any type may be difficult.

The typical display type is only going to show parameters that are part of the standard OBDII mandated setup. Trans temp is not part of that.

Some more expansive tuners may display it. But don't know what's available for a 4Runner. I know super chips has a tuner that will show trans temp. Some on the WJ jeep Fourm have them.

I have a scangauge and am thinking about pulling it out of my Saturn to see if the posted PID for trans temp works. I've read that the 3rd gens trans temp may not be available yet. Know one has figured out what the PID is yet.

The dongle is $25 from Amazon; Elm327 WIFI Wirless OBD2.

I have not found an app that natively reads trans temp. I default to OBD Fusion for most diagnostics and I think there is a way to add trans temp but I never got around to doing it.

Another app Engine Link OBDII has some instructions for adding different codes and looks like it could be modified to read trans temp. I am not good at programming stuff and the instructions were not the best but it seemed set up for the additions.

Both apps were less than $10 a month ago…. OBD Fusion more reliable for everyday use but Engine Link was fine and definatly had the capability to add codes.

Can't find the link but was sure people had gotten 3rd gen trans temp with SG and I imagine this open the door to the other app type readers.

3rd gens will report trans temp but I think it starts in like 99 or 00. I have an 01 with an SGII and it reports my trans temp.

That is a cool app. I had the original ODBII Torque thing when I had my android and it sucked.

Cool feature on this is the find your car/parking locator. THAT would be money, especially for Women and older people.

I have had a sg for quite a while and i love it. Recently i went the iphone app route and im pretty disappointed. Apple doesnt play nice and wont open up the bluetooth to third party which is why you have to use the wifi adapter instead. Not sure if my sitch is a oneoff but the latency over the wifi adapter is really bad. Probably 5-10 seconds, and sometimes it quits sending all together. Between the latency and the connectivity issues across several different apps i find it totally unreliable for any real-time information.

Also i dont like that the adapter gets really warm and does not turn off when the car is off. I have enough parasitic drain on my battery and this just adds to it.

My .02 is spend the extra for the sg which is superior in almost every way to the alternative. Between the adapter and all the different apps im probably into it $100, which i feel i wasted since it now sits in my toolbox.

And dont quote me but i dont think the trans temp was readable until 2000, might wanna look into that. You could always tap and hardwire a dedicated gauge. Ive seen several on here that look really nice.

Guess I should clarify that I already have an Actron handheld scanner / OBD reader that shows live engine data, but it doesn't report trans fluid temp. I was hoping there was a cheap way I could monitor it.

Since my iPhone is jailbroken, I wonder if there is a way around this? I may have to research this more. Ideally, I'd like to go with the Bluetooth route. If all else fails, I guess I could use my work phone (an Android) and go with the Torque Pro app or whatever.

I really don't want a permanent gauge installed just to monitor transmission temps. I'd rather have something on my phone that I can pull up for when I'm towing, etc.

Ok, I bought the Engine Link app in the iTunes store, it was like $5 or so. Supposedly it has the ability to monitor trans temps, and add custom PIDs, so we'll see.

I also bought a bluetooth OBD2 adapter. I went with the "expensive" BAFX one on Amazon for $25. In order to make my iPhone work with the bluetooth adapter, I downloaded RoqyBT4 from the Cydia store (i.e. the store for jail broken iPhones), which was $7. Then I downloaded the RoqyOBD add-on.

The adapter should be in my mailbox tomorrow, so we'll see then if it works or not.

Yours reports the trans temp from the posted PID correct? You punched it into the SC........

I'm tempted to try and find the trans temp for the older gen 3's. But I need a good known PID as a starting point to walk through the memory locations.

I don't think older 3rd gens ('98 and older) have the sensor, therefore there won't be a PID for trans temp.

I'll have to look for it on the trans.

I was hoping it was just a different PID address.
