The P0446 code does cover a good bit. It's not as specific as other codes...it is just a generality more or less:

Well, nothing on the list looks too daunting, so I guess it's best that I don't have worse codes popping up.

I looked for you too and didn't see it. This is what I'd do, select a major part to ensure they more than likely have the entire vehicle there on site and then call with your specific part in mind.
Use something like "Front End Assembly" most of the truck should be there if they have this or maybe you could think of something better.

You're on the right track.
Badgate, you'll have to search by "Fuel Tank". Then starting calling places and describe the part you need, i.e. the charcoal canister. Chances are, if the fuel tank is still intact, so is the canister. Good luck.

My light came on again, so I'll take it to the shop tomorrow. Now I know exactly what is causing it to go on--both times I had filled up the tank the day before (stop on the first click) and drove it around afterward without the light coming on, but once I park it overnight and drive it the next morning the light will come on. So, full tank, sit overnight, light comes on in morning. Exact situation both times, and I had reset it after the first time.

OK, so, going with this definite set-off situation I know there is a problem. I don't top off the fuel tank, BTW, just stop on its first click.
The code today was P0440. The mechanic reset it and we'll look at things underneath next week when I get my filters, fluids, and servicing done.
I don't know what P0440 means exactly, but that's what it's throwing.
The mechanic is really good, though, as he doesn't want to throw parts at it, he actually wants to be patient and make sure we get this done as cheaply as possible. He works on cars, he's not a parts salesman.

There are several things they'll check with this code.
The first is a check valve on the fuel evaporation circuit.
The next culprit is your charcoal canister. They'll rule everything else out and then if nothing else checks out it is the last culprit so to speak.
Get out your pocketbook if it's the canister. Been there, had to do that.
Also, be sitting down when they tell you what it costs. ;-)

P0440 means a Vapor Pressure Leak from the fuel system. First suspect is always gas cap--loose or defective or not Toyota original. It seems pretty clear you are losing pressure overnight, not when engine is running. Other suspects are:
Damage to :
-Fuel tank (this can be pressure tested from the hose at the canister (.7psi should be maintained for 1 min.)
-Charcoal canister (leaking due to crack or damage)
-Fuel tank filler pipe
-Hoses and tubes around fuel tank and canister.
If those are ruled out, go onto Vapor pressure sensor wiring and the sensor itself. Procedure is in the FSM.

Yeah, I threw this code once, pretty sure it was a leak in the fuel filler pipe as the next week I was under it and put my finger through the rusty filler pipe.
I expect it to go away once I get the new filler pipe in. Check all your other hoses connected to the fuel tank for leaks. That is an easy check and cheap fix.
BTW, where is the charcoal canister? This may sounds pretty stupid, but I couldn't find mine. Is it above the gas tank somewhere? I didn't drop the tank when I was looking for it.

Resisting the urge to start a new thread out of my sheer anger at the Toyota dealership, I'm continuing in this thread just so the topic stays in one place.
I went to get a diagnostic done today, and I think all they did was read the code, guess what the problem is, and erase the code. They said they were going to run a computer diagnostic that rules out things and finds the exact problem, but I don't think they did ****.
CAUSE: CHECKED ENGINE LIGHT, FOUND CODE P0400 EVAP CONTROL SYSTEM MALFUNCTION, SUSPECT CANISTER IS FAULTY, ERASED CODE.
P0400 isn't even a ****ing evap code--I paid $70 for a diagnostic test and they couldn't even get the crucial information right. I know they meant P0440, but that's only because I know anything.
So, the local mechanic read P0446, and replaced a valve. Then a few days later he read P0441, checked things out underneath, and said my best bet is a new filler pipe or a smoke test.
I phoned Toyota about a smoke test, and they said a diagnostic is the best bet as it will pinpoint things--yeah, the canister, which everyone is already guessing--but they really didn't do anything except read a code and erase it. I think I'll ask for a refund since they screwed up the number--which is what I paid for.
Well, $275 into this I have a new valve and the recommendation to get a $250 filler pipe and a $400 canister, and three codes--P0446, P0441, and P0440 (P0400 GRRRRR). Oh yeah, I have the guarantee that the light will go on again in a few days.

Do you have to have the CEL off for some type of government inspection? If not and your filler pipe is ok, then I don't see a need to spend $500 on parts just to get a CEL off. There isn't any harm done by other than you might be leaking a bit more fumes into the air. My CEL is on b/c of the same reason, I don't plan on spending money to fix it. I do not have to have my truck inspected either though.

Don't pay 250 for a filler pipe. I got one for $125 and installed it myself. Took a couple hours with a few mishaps. I am working on a walkthrough, but I didn't take too many pics.

Let me know if you have any questions. This is a seriously easy fix, nothing complicated. I had a bolt break off and had to drill out and re-tap a hole, which was a pain cause it was hard to get to, but all in all it was still an easy fix.

The problem with the P0446 code
I wish I could tell you that this code is unique to toyota. Guess what it is not. It is the universal code for every manufacture out there. I stands for either to much pressure in the fuel containment and delivery system or vacume leak in the fuel containment system and delivery system.
So any hose, valvue, sensor, canister or filter along with the gas cap can be the problem. The reason it is so hard to diagnose is because it covers every manufacturer out there and they are all different.
I have a little KIA I use for my 175 mile round trip for work. P0446 on it last year. Finally ended up being this little $15.00 sensor that senses the presure in the tank, but put in $800.00 worth of parts before that.
My 2004 Ford Excursion P0446. Got lucky on this saw a crack in the fill hose befor I started throwing money at it. 4 hours of breaking knuckles and $52 problem solved.
Now my 99 4runner same code. Seeing how the canister and valvue are mounted perfectly for a off road vehical (OHV would indicate dust so lets place a dust sensitive item right in the open to collect all of it) I am assuming my recent excisive dirt road driving has clogged the sucker.
I wish I could just turn the bulb out in Arizona. Not here when you go thru emmisions they hook up the scan tool and read the codes. OH and if you think just using the tool deletes the codes it don't. Emmisions can still see the old codes and you have to provide receipts to show the work was done.
Have fun. I would not wish this code on my worst enemy!

P0455 is more of a gross leak and the gas cap would have to have been off to cause this?P0446 IS a canister failure/vsv.
I dont know why no one metioned the smoke test untill so late in this thread,or why a dealer would have thrown a 18$ part on without putting a new one on and rechecking and monitoring the system after putting it on.??
The system can be monitored and checked for problems inside a 1 hour diag,the ? Being is there a lazy tech at the other end of the computer?
