Good service recommendations for So Cal, San Fernando Valley

Hi. Never owned a Toyota before. Just recently purchased my friends 92 4Runner, 4WD, auto, 80,000 miles. Super clean and very well maintained. Car has been flawless for about 6 months. Recently the speedo stopped working. First intermittent then out all together. A day or two after, the auto trans doesn't want to shift out of first gear. Couldn't find anything in the search relating to my specific problem. Hope it's not a major trans problem. Would appreciate any recommendations for good mechanic's..... Was wondering if there are any fellow group members that have had great experiences from independent repair people here in So. Cal., the San Fernando Valley 91604. Figure it's a good time to develop a relationship with a reputable shop. Thanks in advance.

Check your tranny fluid first. Could be something that simple.

Thanks mpleitez. Checked it, it was the first thing I did. Good color and smell.
