Got a leak, need input

Thanks guys, that's what I'll do. Gotta stop by the parts store to pick up some of the crush washers then I'll hit up the TC in the morning. :hatsoff:
 
So which White Shepherd product do most of you recommend for this leak problem?

Seems most of you went with the regular Oil Additive but did anyone try the transmission additive? If you used the transmission additive did it work?
 
I went with the regular oil stop. I have had it in for about 2 weeks now and am happy to report the leak has slowed to almost nothing, if not stopped completely. I did half a bottle with new cheap gear oil, and plan on swapping the oil here soon.

This. I definitely suggest running this until the leak stops, then changing the fluid as mentioned here. I didn't do this, didn't know better at the time. People seem to be having great luck as long as the leak is minor.
 
Thanks for all the help Ark... I will report back later when I hear back from the dealer.

The car shifts fine and I have not had the problems other than noticing the leak today. There is no pool or even a single drop in my garage so this problem just popped up.

Well....

In addition to my XREAS Failure which I am replacing...I too received the dealers news that my actuator was leaking! I have been parking on an area, with wood chips for the last month and don't have an opportunity to see little leaks...so Thanks to them...

I got the $1600 estimate told them, i'd think about it.

Sooooo....I ordered the White Sheperd Transmission Leak Fix....just to be different.

What do you all think? Are there any lurkers that have used the WS Tranny Leak BLU00236

I was just thinking it must be the same stuff in perhaps a different concentration???

Certainly a Transfer case is a more similar environment to a transmission than and engine. That was my thought process anyway. I will post the positive or negative out comes when I get my magic juice!

PS that was one fine trip to the Dealer

XREAS REPLACE - $1800
T-Case Leak - $1600
Burnt Lights - $ 55
Fix Rear Wiper Free (dummy me, the window was down 1-2 mm)
Fix Rear Defroster Free same

I used the dealers internet to research on the forums what my plan B was going to be!!! HAHAHAHHAHAHHA

I do have to say that the Mark Miller SLC Toyota Service Shop was soild though. All true problems and ball park costs. Sweet waiting arrangements and Saturday Mechanics.
 
Lets us know how the WS Tranny fluid works. Just FIY its been 9 months and the actuator leak has not returned.
 
My leak has mostly slowed to an occasional drip, but hasn't stopped completely.
Still full of oil though.. so I'm leaving it for now...

As far as the oil stop or the transmission stop, I went with oil stop after a mechanic friend reminded me that the transfer case has gear oil in it, whereas with the transmission has hydraulic fluid.

Thanks, perhaps I will eat the cost and shelve the tranny stuff and order the Oil stop.

Has anyone found this stuff off the shelf in autoparts places or is it online only?
 
I was able to get it off the shelf at Advance Auto. They actually had an empty bottle on the shelf for display cuz people were stealing the stuff. The bottles for sell were behind/under the cash register. =)
 
quick question: I recently changed the gear oil in my transfer case. Can I just add the ws or do i need to change the fluid again? Figure i'll throw the white shepherd in there and tighten the actuator to see if it works on mine.

Also, for whatever reason the service manuals linked on this site aren't opening for me. Anyone know the torque specs on on t-case drain plug, fill plug, and the actuator?
 
If tit can add the ws without over filling (it running back out of the fill plug), that'll be fine. don't have the torque specs, can try to look them up later if needed.
 
Same leak on my '03, just been living with it for a few years. Been following this thread, curious how it will work out, please keep the updates coming fellas!

Transfer shift actuator assy x Case rear 14 ft lbs
Case No.1 plug (Filler plug) x Case rear 27 ft lbs
Case No.1 plug (Drain plug) x Case rear 27 ft lbs
 
Low Dealer Estimate

I have the same leak that developed in my 04 V8. Initial dealer estimate was $850 which I thought was outrageous. I went to another mechanic I trust and was quoted $3000. He couldn't believe Toyota quoted so low for a miserable and long job. His theory FWIW....this is a known design defect issue with Toyota, they are worried about a class action suit, and Toyota is subsidizing their dealerships to perform they repair as cheaply as they can....who knows, anyway I called my dealer and hinted at some of this ie. design defect, known problem, etc. and magically they were willing to take 20% of the bill so I'm down to about $600 for the repair which is still way more than I want to spend. Do I take the deal or roll the dice with the WS???

That's a great deal and a tough call. Are you positive they're dropping/splitting the transfer case? It can be done without doing this, although it is not really recommended. Not dropping/splitting the transfer case would result in getting the job done much quicker.
 
Yeah, he said to plan on having it in for 2-3 days, it takes one day to open it and see what the problem is, and another day or two to order replacement part and reinstall. He did also say though that the actuator may need to be replaced which I can only imagine would make it a lot more expensive. Any idea on how likely you think it is that the actuator needs to be replaced too?
 
So actuator is still leaking. Called 2 dealers and got a $950 and a $1550 quote. Difference is one quoted 8 hrs and the other 15 hrs. Anyone know the definitive answer as far as hours for this job?
