Got Hit! Need a new bumper

Well I just got my 5th gen about 3 weeks ago, and today on my way to lunch I got rear ended by a semi that apparently needed to get on the freeway at the same time as me.

Rear bumper is toast, and I will probably need a good buff to remove some of the paint and scuffs he left behind on the body.

I haven't met with the insurance yet so I have no idea what they are going to do, but I figured Id start looking for a new bumper now.

I'm not sure if I want to just get a factory replacement or with some aftermarket armor.

Most of the aftermarket bumpers I have seen still require you to have a factory bumper.

Does anyone have an suggestions for an aftermarket bumper that doesnt require a factory bumper?

Few and far between, man - seems like the aftermarket is starting to send a little love the 5th-gen's way now though, especially since the FJ is defunct. I have a CBI rear on order for mine right now. It pretty much just needs parts and pieces of the factory bumper plastic, so maybe you can get away with just buying a cover.

If you're talking about the rear crossmember, I think the 4x4 Labs bumper is the only one that removes it. But if you're not off roading and need better rear end protection, tire swing out, or fuel carriers, I would just get a new factory one.

Not talking about the crossmember. Im referring to the bumper cover. It seems that most aftermarket bumpers still use the stock bumper cover in their design.

I am not a huge fan of the 4x4 labs bumpers. They look great, but the whole mounting system and general fit of them is not something I want.

Ahh. You're right then, most reuse at least some of the stock plastic. Let us know what you decide to do. IMO the Shrockworks is the best looking rear bumper out there right now.

saw the pics on texas 4runners. i feel your pain. i dealt with insurance last year and it SUCKS, especially when you only carry liability because you drive a beater and the other insurance company is crooks... :frusty: but enough of that because now im a part of the 4runner family. :cheers:

in the way of bumpers that require total removal i do not know. might be worth it to get the plastic bumper piece in black and then get to modifying. unfortunately the damage mostly looks cosmetic but that entire bumper piece will have to be replaced from what i can see. And your rear hatch needs some TLC...

You could try to leave the plastic bumper as is, get them to fix the rear hatch, cut away the chunk of bumper that needs to be removed for an aftermarket bumper and go on your way? you would always see the marks but it may work out better being able to put more money into the aftermarket bumper.

personally i think the CBI bumper is my favorite... the optional swing out tire carrier with gas can holder is pretty neat. its also has very clean lines.

I just got rear ended a month ago which did about $3,000 worth of damage to my bumper / liftgate. If it wasn't your fault get it fixed with OEM parts, then go after them for the diminished value of your vehicle (which might end up paying for your aftermarket bumper).

Now comes decision making time. Do I want to just replace the rear with a stock bumper, or upgrade.

If you're really worried about needing a new bumper cover to cut to fit over the actual bumper, see if you can get whatever manufacturer to come up with a fabbed design that comes up to tail lights + fender, whatever. Or just another bumper skin and call it a day.

This time is a little worse. Girl hit me going about 45 when I was sitting at a head stop.

My truck:



Hard to tell but the bumper is completely destroyed. Crossmember is bent and so is the exhaust. My backup sensors are toast, driver side tail light is broken. Thankfully it looks like she missed the hatch.
