Hello everyone! New to the forum, I have an 85 4Runner, and I need help!!! I cant find anyone having this problem anywhere... I rebuilt my entire motor in March, everything's new except for the valve cover.
Anyays... back to my problem. After breaking in the motor, I started doing some trail driving, climbing, and mudding. 4wd worked GREAT. Well, one day I was out hittin the mud spot, got stuck, threw it in 4 low to get out, then heard a HORRIBLE grinding sound from the front end and felt really bad vibrations whenever the sound pops up.... after I got out, checked everything, seemed to be fine. Doesnt grind when I ease onto the gas though. I could climb up a 2 foot drop in 4 low perfectly fine as long as I'm easy on the gas. In 4 high, it only does it when the front of the truck raises and my leafs are at full droop. Ive completely rebuilt my knuckles, had both axles serviced, had my tanny serviced, and I had my transfer case serviced... Still hearing the noise. Ive tried putting it in 4 low without locking the hubs, Doesnt make the sound. I've locked the hubs without putting it in 4w and it doesnt make a sound. Also, my U-joints are fine. I got in a situation last week at the poker run where I had to use 4wd for over 5 minutes to get past a spot, and by the time i got out of the situation, there was a rotten egg/sulfer smell coming from the front end. as soon as I got back on the road, and drove a little, the smell went away.
