Grinding noise, please not the tranny!

In the last week or so I've noticed a grinding noise when I'm accelerating. Sometimes it's in a straight line but for the most part it's on a turn. To be more accurate, it sounds like dragging a metal tray across the asphalt (and no..it's not my skid plate). But later I don't hear it, so maybe only when it's "cold".

My mechanic buddy mentioned maybe wheel bearing or PS pump. I didn't think bearing noises were that clear. I had my pickup bearing go out (F250) and those were more knocks when turning.

FWIW I did my ITR,OTR, and LBJ recently and then had the alignment. This started maybe 2 weeks after the alignment. Also fluids were good at that time

thoughts?

Have you checked the fluid on your tranny?

A grinding noise isn't a common noise of a failing automatic tranny. If you can make a short video of the noise that would help.

Also, does it make the noise when you are at a stop or only when you are moving?

My rear wheel bearing made an awful sound when it went. It was pretty loud & screechy. My tranny made an awful lower pitched grinding noise that sounded like it was eating itself when it went toast. Lift each of your wheels up in the air & rock them to see if there's play. It should be pretty obvious if it's your wheel bearing. If you drain some tranny fluid out and it looks like someone poured glitter in it, then put some butter on your toasted tranny.

It could also be your AC idler pulley.

only when moving, not idle. I'll check the wheels tomorrow morning. tranny fluid was good before, but I'll check again

Also give the wheels a spin while they're in the air (you'll have to lift both rears at the same time), you never know what you might hear:

didn't see this until just now. I just came inside and I found the right drivers wheel to make noise with lateral movement. Little play as well. the other wheels were fine. I turned the rig on and turned the wheel (for the PS pump test?) and nothing.

Also, FWIW, when hunting last year I was on some gnarly roads and I remember hearing my drivers front wheel shock suffering. If I have the windows down and I driver slow enough, I'll hear the "pfft" from this side as well.

So now I'm a bit more concerned. Isn't 9-3 movement tie rod related? I just put new OEM inner and outer rods on. Maybe the alignment shop did something to my jam nut? There wasn't any detectable 12-6 movement.

I also have been noticing more steering shimmy and vibration (background info...I already have decent 60mph> vibration and steering wheel wiggle from what I believe to be a twisted rear axle).

My mom had a 2011 RAV4 that did the same thing. Turned out to be the wheel bearing had gone bad. I'd check there first. It's much cheaper that replacing the tranny

ok jacked it up, wiggled every which way...nothing. There's a slight resistance with wheel spinning, but it sounds like the rotor. And it looks like there are some tiny cracks in the rotor surface (I have a TBU to do soon). No tie rod or ball joint wiggle now. Could it have been a temporary issue like a tiny rock stuck somewhere? My buddy suggested the steering rack, but idk how to test that

OK I i did my TBU and aside from brake chatter (i didn't clean the rotors, didn't know they had some sort of resin? on there). that rough sound is still there at all times, and the rattle is more prominent when the vehicle is being driven in the first few minutes from starting up. I was on a highway and I rolled down my windows. I was cruising at 50, then would let off to go down to 35-40. When I gunned it again, I'd hear the rattle. First rattle on the driver side, then I heard it on the passenger side.

Main things should be fine bc fluids are good and nice. I did the PS flush when I did my brakes and rotors. I plan to do a tranny drain and fill (including dropping the pan) this weekend, plus finally clean the crap out of those rotors (brakleen and scouring pad I assume?). I can't imagine what else it is.

T-case and Diff oil was changed out last summer and it's only been maybe 10,000 miles. It's Redline synthetic so it's good stuff in there.

Tranny was also done last summer.

I do have a steering wobble, but I've been told it was my rear axle being a degree twisted or angled by an alignment shop. Is there a way to rule out the steering rack? Would that even make this noise?
