Guidance on upgrading my turn signals

My apologies if this post is redundant but was hoping to get confirmation on upgrading my turn signals to LEDs. Looking at the ones from Diode Dynamics...

Front Turn Signal LEDs for 2006-2009 Toyota 4Runner (pair)
Rear Turn Signal LEDs for 2003-2009 Toyota 4Runner (pair)

From what I found on the board I will need to replace my relay that is located driver side, left of steering wheel.

Did I get this right? Just doing the basic cosmetic upgrades to my 4runner at the moment to go with some minor repairs after buying it. Thank you!

You're spending way too much buying those bulbs from Diode Dynamics.

The CF18 Module will work. But if you want to spend a bit more money, you can get yourself a Smarttap flasher relay that has a bunch more fancy features. Most useful of which is the tap to turn. Was originally $60 last year, but price has increased to $90 since then.

I do like saving money if those bulbs perform just as good. I do want that smart tap actually. This 4runner will be used as a work vehicle and the hazard features make for an ideal bonus without getting an auxiliary system, or perhaps it'll just be an easier approach compared to whatever they do currently for flashers.

Do you have the Daytime Running Lights option?

If you do have DTRL the Smart Tap says it's not for DTRL on Diode Dynamics' website, so you may wan to contact them to be sure or if there's another option.

I saw that and to the best of my knowledge I do not. What is the best way to confirm that I do not have them instead of the option just being turned off?

Maybe someone else can answer that, I don't have DTRL, so I'm not sure if they're on all the time or can be turned off.

You may be able to find out by checking your owner's manual to see how they work, then check to see if you have them or not.

Well I know I don't have them in use but I guess if someone took it to the dealer and had them turned off at the ecu then technically I still have them. I'd think the chances of that are low though. Sounds like the sure way to find out is get to the relay and see if it is an 8 pin or 12 pin relay. I saved a part number for a harness and need to find out if that was to add or delete drl. Sounds like it can do both.

I have the DTRL setup, as soon as you start the car the corner front directionals turn on. When you use a directional it is actually shutting off the light to get the effect. I know of no way to shut them off.

Yeah, my car is a ghost at night until I turn my lights on. There were a few threads on here talking about removing or adding them. I'm still sifting and digesting through it all, should have saved a few. Toyota makes this harness (part 82241-35010) and from my limited understanding, it looked like some people were able to swap based on wanting or not wanting DRLs. Most the other posts are out dated, with no pictures or broken images now sadly.

So the dtrl is the 12 pin relay. It is a pretty big beast and you'll know immediately if you have it.

I have it so I got the 12 to 6 pin adapter and an adjustable relay but ended up keeping the dtrl features and upgrading to led without hyper flash via other means.

I have it laying in my parts box if you're interested and I have no further use for it unless I end up retrofitting my wife's highlander this year.

You'll need either the smart tap or an adjustable resistance relay in order to dodge the hyperflash. It doesn't matter which bulbs you upgrade to led with the dtrl system. It will hyperflash due to the way the lighting system interacts.

Without dtrl I don't believe this is the case if you upgrade your parking light bulb but not your turn signals. I remain free to be wrong however lol.

You are correct about just about everything however. I have some good photos if you look up my build thread. It's still fairly new and I believe all the photos are still linked. I did a quad retrofit and went to hid projectors and led lights everywhere else.

Aren’t DRLs standard on all trims from ‘06 on? That was my impression. In any case, I went the resistor route a few days ago and so far, so good.

What I've wondered is when you add one of the methods to stop hyper-flash will you no longer know if a bulb dies?

Already purchased the smart tap. Will look and see if I have the 12 pin or not to confirm but hopefully I do not. I appreciate your offer. I'm in southwest MI and was ecstatic to see your build start off with rust treatment! I have a little to do myself to keep the frame in good shape. Picked up my 4runner in Ohio. Best 4runner I found out of 5 states and 13 T4Rs.
