Half Denso Half NGK

Just a curious question, but why have half NGK and half Denso in the 4Runner?

Not ALL are like that...just some came through the factory that way. When the engine goes through the assembly line....there's a guy on one side and someone on the other. What plugs they have in their bin at the time is the one that gets installed in the engine.

Toyota messed up early and made contracts with NGK and Denso and had to honor them both by putting half and half on early 4runners

There is no contract that says they MUST put their plugs in the engine...They have a contract to buy so many Denso and so many NGK plugs....They can choose to throw all the Denso plugs out if they wanted to and only use the NGK plugs. I also don't think it was a screwup on Toyota's part. They've had contracts with both companies for decades.

Mine was like that. Dual sourcing contracts maybe..?? I buy the Denso replacements from Rock Auto for $2.63 per plug...so who cares. You will find a lot of OE Denso parts on Rock Auto as well. I just got 9 Denso OEM oil filters for $27 from them.

FWIW this only occurs on V6's.

I believe it is just the v6, but it also occurs on the same v6 in the tacoma even though the engines are built in a different plant.
