hand on or off shift knob when driving?

for lack of a better poll, do you put you hand on your shift knob or off your shift knob when driving. and when i say "your shift knob" i mean the one on your damn 4runner.

After about 15 years of driving manual transmission cars, I find it hard to avoid resting my hand on the shifter of my 4Runner.

You should have added a category to the poll that has a "hands on - hands off" option. I drive both ways.

I voted hand on, but the truth is I spend about half the time with my hand on it and half off.

One of my other cars is a standard and though I try to keep both hands on the wheel in the 4Runner sometimes I regress and rest my hand on the shifter.

Same here. But I try to keep both on the wheel.


I also have a bad habit of lifting off the throttle when the tranny shifts.

Though my 4Runner is a auto, my other cars are manuals so when in the city/town it's on the stick but if I am in 5th on the highway on the wheel.

my gf does that she don't care if it an auto or manual so always has her hands on my shifter when I let her drive but, with an auto she had more hand time.:

I have to say I drive with both hands.The previus owner put some small diamiter stering wheel on it.Will change that in time doesnt seem like a good idea for off road, but that is no time soon with my project rig.My accord on the other hand i drive one hand on the stick.

i drive with my left elbow on the drivers side window sill and 3/4 of the time both hands on the wheel. Where the shifter is in the 3rd gen is not a convienent place to rest your right hand unless you have freakishly long arms, and im 6'2.

I forgot about that. When she's with me it's either on her leg or holding her hand. Otherwise, it's on the shift knob. Unless it's cold out, then I put both hands on the wheel, in front of the 2 driver side heater vents.
